Don't depend on Google totally.

Besides Google, try to search new customers and build relationship with customers through social media sites for long term such as Facebook, Twitter.

I would like to say,You are going to google,not google is coming to you.So they can do anything what they want to improve their search results or to generate more money.But SEO has very vast area and this is not limited within 2-3 keywords only.So open your eyes and start working on other keywords which you think can help you to generate traffic and improve business sale.Also focus on other online marketing medium along with Google.Keep working on keywords and internet marketing for your website as this work can never stop.
There are lot of ways to overcome form penguin penalty so you can read various articles over the internet regarding it.Do you need any help,please let us know.

Google is in trouble. Search is their cash cow, but it's losing ground.

What we need is for Apple to buy DuckDuckGo, then they'll be some serious competition for Google Search.

Everyone saying "do not depend on google only" WITHOUT saying what would be an alternative is talking bullshit.

There is no real alternative to google when it comes to traffic. Point.

The exception is spaming and some weird niches.

Thats the reason why no one here will say what the "alternatives" are.

Sorry, but thats exactly the stupid noob examples i liked to point too.

Noob examples? Exactly - because its far to short thought out.
Its the same as i say "create somewhat like facebook.com and you will have your
extra traffic". Its a true sentence. But its bull.

Not a single point on your list will deliver even 10% of the traffic a good google ranking for a good search term will deliver.

For a somewhat good keyword you would need *most* or even *all* your points to come to an equal traffic as you got from google for a good ranking 3 phrase keyword and its sub keys.

BUT: The WORK and TIME you have to deliver content and all to 5, 10 or 16 different traffic sources to enable them for good traffic will eat up all the positive effects.

In that time you can bring a whole new site on start at google, getting even more traffic from it.

Because to make traffic with video, podcast, pdf and such you will need GOOD content. Very good quality content.

You can deliver that but you are not able to deliver good ranking sites to google??!

I give you a hint - IF you are able to produce kick ass videos, podcast, pdf and all then do not try to use them for traffic ... Create an own website around it. If you are such a content magician you will be able to create an somewhat quality website too.

THAT will rank google for sure and you will get an authority site for sure in a short time.

Look at the websites people here are posting effected by Panda & Penguin.
All of them are lacking exactly that special content.

So, you're saying to forget those sources because you'll get more from Google. I've been using some of those sources John mentions for years and more. In fact, I don't rank exceptionally high on Google. If I were to rely exclusively on them, I'd be out on the street. Most of my clients don't come from being found organically. You know, 10% here and 15% there, another 5% over there of your potential clientele adds up. I don't dismiss those sources because my clients are there and won't necessarily find me by doing a search. Sure it's nice when they do (and it's relatively free) but I'm not going to base my whole business and livelihood on one thing.

Will everyone one of those work? No. You have to be smart where and how you promote yourself depending on your situation. Your example of Youtube sounded good but it didn't work (right thing, wrong market).

A few things missing from John's diagram are PPC, newsletters and newspaper ads. You can go further if you've got the cash and it makes sense with radio and television. If you provide a service, freelancing sites can be good.

Artice marketing through article directories brings you like 1 visit a day if you're lucky.

PDF/doc sharing, should be happy if you get 5 views in a month.

Lets not even mention RSS

Video, yeah right, you need to make a very good video do you want to get any views, and then you need to SEO or market the video as well to get any exposure, almost as easy to direct SEO your website.

All the rest, blabla, same things apply, for social you need a following, and for all the rest you also need to market it cause just posting things on those platforms is not going to give you any noticable amount of visitors. When you add up the time/costs to make a success out of every single item that you suggest then you're off just as easy by SEO'ing a website directly in a proper way.

The only things of your list that do result in good traffic without having to market the individual thing itself are forum posting and classifieds. All the rest won't deliver (much of any) traffic out of itself.

My brother gets an average of around 10,000 Youtube video views per day, with zero viral videos.

You have two options on video traffic:

Viral videos (almost impossible to get)
Saturate the niche with a lot of videos

All my brother does is saturate the video niche with a lot of videos (500+ videos in the same niche). The key is to stay focused on a single niche.

To me, that's the wrong attitude. I don't care how many visitors a day whatever I'm doing is going to bring me. For starters, I know there really is not that many people looking for my services, relatively speaking. The market is only so big. Even so, if an article brings me even one visitor a day, I would be very happy. It means one of those will become a client every two weeks and that client could be worth thousands of dollars over his lifetime.

You probably wouldn't use articles to sell refrigerators for example. Each situation is different in what methods you use. But a low expected number of visitors is not a reason not to use that method. Many methods will get you more exposure and more visitors all together. I don't think that's anything to sneeze at.

PPC, SEO, Forums, Classifieds - in that order.

I agree more with you than with Paul's list. But again, every situation is different, you can't generalize. Paul may be offering a product or service that is perfectly suited for Squidoo and Twitter. Mine would not be. Hardy Chou added another method - JV - which works for him. Now that I think about it, I've had success with that too, so another to put on the list.

Im sorry to hear that your website has fallen in rankings. I assume its because you havent done SEO in a while for your website-rankings dont usually fall that quickly unless that is the case. Unless one of the updates hit you that is. Make sure you have done on page optimization, and put some quality content on your website.

John, your list is very comprehensive and I have tried using the majority for traffic to my sites, but they don't compare to the targeted traffic I get from Google. My sites are predominantly product reviews so when someone wants to read about and consequently buy product x, they'll simply use Google. All my conversions are from Google searches. The odd person who trickles through from Pinterest or an article site never purchases. Surely it's down to the niche?

Are you accurately tracking and measuring your conversions/sources of referrals?

If I asked for your analytics login, could you give it to me with total confidence that you are?

So many people say "Nothing else works".

Hi John, yes I do and vigorously. I even wrote an article about it a while ago here:

I use GA tracking code for each of my links to Amazon so I know exactly what links are being clicked on. I then compare with traffic sources and keywords used. If I find any further useful keywords, I write more articles utilising those new keywords.

Ok Jodie that's great. You're already doing 99% more than what most people bother to do. You've mentioned Amazon and keywords....now revisit that list I posted above, and implement ALL of those other traffic sources and you will be smashing it.

Google algorithm changes several times per year and even it natural. However , i know you don't like this, but Google ranks some website well for months and suddenly everything changes and you lost your ranking on Google and sometimes, it has no clear reason.

Google is not playing to anyone but they are just giving answers to the spammers. And as the old phrase that "Someone's mischief, entire class punished for it! ", same things apply here. Actually Google now started to think like users & focus on users requirement, So if your product are in demand and your site info is correct for users then definitely it will be in rank. But if Google got some more relevant data then they go with it. So try to update your site according to user requirement.

Hi John,

That's a really good diagram - thanks. My concern is that my websites specifically don't appear to work using traffic sources other than Google. For example, I have created Facebook and Twitter accounts with lots of information about the products I write reviews about. No-one 'likes' these Facebook pages and not one person has starting following my tweets. Why? Because when they decide to buy a microwave (for example), they do not want to follow pointless tweets or 'like' Facebook pages. They just want to buy the microwave and move on. I spent weeks creating great videos on YouTube by purchasing products and going through every detail about each one. I've had thousands of views on YouTube and around 5 click throughs to my websites. Forum posting has been a little more successful, but only when the topic is discussed. I use Google Alerts to find out when my keywords are mentioned and most of the time it'll will be a forum post asking 'should I buy product x'. I then answer in detail with a link to my site. Again, I'll get a trickle of visitors and then radio silence.

I think if your website is related to more general topics i.e. making money or how to lose weight etc. you're going to benefit from all of the points in your diagram because visitors will want to return and use a variety of sources to find you i.e. someone will want to listen to a podcast on the top 10 ways to lose weight and not the top 10 kettles to purchase in 2012.

Sometimes Jodie I see people doing the right things in the wrong markets, and others do the wrong things in the right markets. Then I see people who just don't know what they're doing at all.

I don't know what you're doing, but if you're pushing amazon affiliate sites promoting hot trends and the latest "have to have" products, then you'll need to ask yourself ....."Is this really a business, or am I just doing stuff?"

The strategy I demonstrated above is the same strategy that my mentor implements within his own business, and he is approaching $10M a year.

You seem to be hit by Google's EMD update released by the begining of October 2012. Keep on doing the good works, remove bad backlinks, clear your broken links and work steadily. Your site will come back in the search results..

Why do people feel that google is personally responsible for the
success of their business? That is so friggin' laughable.

Google looks out for THEIR business, not yours.

There is no Mr. Google actively wanting, needing, or thinking
about your business.

People need to get over themselves. Just because you think
your site is the #$$%%%'s, does not mean anyone else
has to.

You are the one who is responsible for getting traffic to your site.

I'll narrow the list down: squidoo, twitter, facebook, forums. In that
order.

If you have a real business, then why do not think that you have to
do what all real businesses have to do at some point? Advertise.
And pay for it.

Relying on your website to get traffic from google is a BIG NO NO.. Spread your wings and dominate all the other search engines...

My Appliance Repair Business was spending over 7k monthly on PPC with google and because I added a new business to my adwords campaign Google banned me all together.. with no reason explained..

Thats not even the messes up part... I called google and they set my campaigns up for my new business and then 1 week later sent email saying .." Your account has been suspended"

After 4 Years spending 7k average monthly and that is the treatment I get... WTF

If they start a ban against google I want to be the first to sign..

What are those sites in first page in Google and how they got ranked there?

That would be funny if one day you search on google and you see that results

Social media which I thought a few years ago was a fad, will have an impact on having to do so much SEO. I'd rather gets 20 hits on my site per tweet, rather than having to go through all the work of SEO. I really love Twitter for this purpose, I'll use G+ to post a few things. It's almost like saying "ok bump my site down in your dumb search" I'll just use G+ to get those visits.

Great thing about this social media rise is that Google has no stranglehold on it. Everyone else though has to be on the alert. I remember when Yahoo, Infoseek and a few others dominated in the early 90's, Google snuck up on them ninja style and the rest of the domination is history.

Incidently 1 of my sites got bumped down a Page Rank, but traffic has increased to all time highs,, thanks Twitter

Google didn't sneak up on any other search engine, Google evolved. The rest of the search engines still think it's 1997.

For last few months my site was rakning high with 2,3 searches at first page while at least 2 searches at each page in the first 10 pages. But last 2 weeks, my first product search shows at the 5th page and almost 2 or 3 searches total in first 10 pages.

very sorry to know that the searh result ranking on your site is dancing so much.
I think the GG is putting more effort to rank real trusted site than sites that is building links for specific anchor text.

Just advice you use many techniques to drive TRAFFIC, donot rely on Google only.

How do I honestly think of SEO?

Just a bonus. It's like uhm.. "Frosting on the cake".

The way I view SEO is simple; a neatly organized website, will be SEO friendly anyhow.

I'm typically a very organized dude, so it all works out.
