Will Collapsible Box on Home Page Spoil On-page SEO

Hi,

My client is having a new website designed and intends to have a text box on the home page which will contain her main keywords in about 200-300 words.

The designer has suggested that users have the option to collapse the box and even have it moveable on the home page but I am worried that in doing this, any SEO benefit may be lost.

The website is going to be built on a Wordpress platform and I assume the collapsible box will be created using jquery or the like.

Am I worrying unnecessarily or do I have a valid concern?

many thanks,

Michelle

Depends on whether google does a manual review and see's this as keyword spam. I have several clients that use CSS and tabs to make content more easily accessible. Though that content isn't keyword stuffed in the slightest and is obviously there for usability. In that case, there is little to no risk.

A site I work with daily has collapsable boxes (controlled through javascript as well) and the content is crawled by Google. I wouldn't see an issue in doing what your designer is interested in.

If your not stuffing the box with keywords, don't worry about it.

A manual review isn't a big deal (doubtful it will ever happen for SEO) as long as your not stuffing/hiding keywords.

Easiest way to check how well Google can read the text on a page is to look at the text only version of the page in the Google cache.

    To do that, type in

    cache:yoursite.com

into the Google and then click on the link on the top right hand side of the page that says "Text-Only Version"
