Hey,

I am lot confused to understand this three difference. Having few questions in my mind. Let me tell you here.

1) When I typed into google search article writing service I got 593,000,000 results. Now, this means I am telling google to show me the pages that used all of these words in any order or any other words. Now, does it mean that article writing service would count in exact match in google keyword toolbar? In the same way, when I typed into google search "article writing service" then I got results 2,140,000 results. So, "article writing service" should count in pharse match in google keyword toolbar - Is it so? Or Google search is only used for seeing the competition between Broad and pharse? Or there is no any relationship between google search and google keyword toolbar?

Kindly, help me out here.

Thanks

Hey there, if by Google keyword toolbar you are referring to the Google Keyword Tool then that is exactly what you need to use in order to see how many monthly searches the keyword gets etc.

When you type the word over at Google.com it is mainly to check out the competition of the sites ranking for that keyword.

Can you please differentiate between Exact, broad and Phrase keywords in keywords research?

Yeah your fist search query was broad, so any page that contained that phrase would show up in the SERPS, that's why that number is so big. On you second query with quotes, that is the phrase for exact match, so it shows pages with the exact match phrase, so your results are smaller and usually less competition.

    Thanks for your suggestion guys!!!

One more question: Only two things should take care while doing a keyword research.

    1) Monthly search volume should be good of that keyword that we are going to targeting (How many monthly searches should be consider desire?)

    2) Competition of that keyword that we are going to target (How much competition should be considered proper?)

Any other things should need to take care while doing Keyword research???

    Waiting for your prompt reply.

There's no magic number. If it is an extremely targeted buyer keyword, then you can take on a keyword with relatively low search volume (eg: <500 GMS).

The most important thing is to always look at the exact match search figures.

      2) Competition of that keyword that we are going to target (How much competition should be considered proper?)
Competition comes down to many things such as:

      1. Your level of SEO experience and resources
      2. The value of the market you are targeting

To assess your competition, you need to analyse the top 10 results for whatever keyword you are targeting. This is your only real competition as no one aims to rank on page 2 and lower.

In particular, pay careful attention to the top 3 places as that's where you ultimately want to rank.

You need to analyse on-page SEO factors such as keywords in titles, description, internal linking structure etc.

Then most importantly, look at the backlinks, eg: the number, the quality, link diversity, anchor text diversity etc.

  • Devidmartyn,

While the Google keyword tool is a great resource, I would be careful how you use it. Running queries on this tool while logged in will show you different results than if you are logged out. Check out this post from SEOMoz on discrepancies found in the tool.

    Hope that helps,

Those examples are not exactly correct. Let's assume that your keyword is golf shoes.

        Exact match = golf shoes

Phrase match still includes the exact match keyword but may have other words at beginning or end. Examples: red golf shoes, golf shoes size 13, etc. Phrase match also includes common misspellings or a singular or plural version of the original keyword: golfe shoes, golf shoe, etc. (Phrase match does not contain words that are not in your queried search string nor does it change the word order.)

Broad match may include only part of the original keyword and/or it may also include lots of extra words. Examples: golf footwear, shoes for golfers, etc. (Broad match is where only partial results appear, where other words get added to partial results, and when the order of the words is changed.)

        Hope this helps clarify.

Actually they were both Exact Match searches.

        Not quite.

Let's take the original keyword of article writing service.

Broad Match is the number of times people perform a search with those words in the query in any order with any number of other words mixed in.

        So, for example...

        article writing service
where can I find an service for article writing
writing service to produce a quality article
the best writing service for an article

...would all contribute to the Broad search number.

Phrase Match tells you how many times people perform a search with those words in the query in that exact order, but can include any other words around them.

        So, for example...

        article writing service
        best article writing service
hiring a local article writing service
        article writing service reviews
        article writing review service

...would all contribute to the Phrase Match search number.

Exact Match is how many times people perform a search with those words in that exact order without any other words being involved in the query. Inside or not inside quotes makes no difference. They are both part of the Exact Match data.

        So....

        article writing service
        "article writing service"

...would both contribute to the Exact Match search volume.

Exact Match is really the only one that matters.

Some really good examples there Mike.

          However, your last one:

          article writing review service

is a broad match and not phrase match.

Phrase match has the words in order, but there can be punctuation. For example, the following are still phrase matches

Article Writing. Service is now available.
finished the article. Writing service for all ages.

My bad. That was supposed to be with the broad match examples. Not enough caffeine today.

@Devidmartyn -- If you are serious about keyword research and plan on doing a fair amount, it might be wise to purchase a keyword research tool that can do some of the heavy lifting for you. I've used both Market Samurai and MicroNicheFinder and they are both great tools. If you're not going to be doing a lot of research, though, they may not be worth the investment. Just food for thought depending on your research plans now and in the future.
