Why do people still submit to directories?

I don't get it. I mean I know Yahoo and DMOZ are quality web directories that do provide an SEO benefit, but reciprocal linking and submitting to free directories is dead as far as I'm concerned.

What is everyone's thoughts on this? Do you still submit to web directories? Hasn't Google made significant efforts to disqualify spammy keyword anchor text filled web directory links?

Some insight on the current status of web directories and the benefit they provide in terms of SEO would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks Warriors!

yea good question, I think the only valuable directories are as you say a select few quality web directories. More importantly though does submitting to multiple free low PR web directories now harm your website ranking? There's a SEO Survey on the Nebstone website now which asks a few questions like this and you can see results there when enough people have done the survey.

If by free directories you mean Yelp, Foursquare, Google Places, Merchant Circle, Manta, iBegin, etc., I completely disagree with you. Especially for local SEO, there is value in them. Outside of those type of directories, I do not submit to anything that is free or not heavily moderated (Dmoz).

    Link Diversity
    Referring Domain Increase
    Referring IP Increase

Devalue Does not mean = 0

I will happily add the 3 factors I mentioned above to my link profile and allow Google to keep the link juice to whatever they want.

There are some authority directories and submitting on those directories can give a lot of search engine advantage. They does not approve any of the submitted links and they take a very long time to approve a site on their directories. Most importantly, they are manually approved sites.

Aslong as the directory is relevant to the site you're linking to.

Everything in moderation, gone are the days of spamming your link to directories, in are the days of strategic placement of your links around the web in places that it makes sense to have them.

I agree with the moderation comments. Just like with anything else, directory submission requires careful thought. It requires good content.

there are thousands of good (different) local directories. There will always be value to these especially for local serps. I see a lot of competitors in local search using these aged directories and gaining a huge advantage over lots of other sites. For mobile, "directories" like yelp, fs, etc will always have their values, if not for search rankings, but as another form of traffic/marketing.

Submission means get back-linking to you.
No submission means no link build.

You are referring to low PR auto approve directories such as PHPLD or eSyndicate?

There is a lot of speculation that they can harm your site.

But this is only for people who don't have an authority site.

Once your site is an authority site, you can pretty much throw any links at it and it wont have a negative effect.

Take WordPress.com for example (or a sub-domain of WordPress.com). Or even a Blogspot.com blog. You can throw 5k submissions on them and they never get penalised by the search engines.

Do that same submission on a new domain with no authority or any kind of link diversity and you may as well just deregister the domain and forget that site exists as it will get slapped definitely.

This is good to do to new domains you know your competitor has. In fact, I even see some people offering competitor domain spamming by building say 10k low value forum profiles to new sites to get them slapped.

It's a dirty game but it happens.

    Food for thought for you.

I think the primary reason that people still are involved in directory submissions is because it's an easy-win link. If you've got a manager breathing down your neck demanding you get 100 links this month chances are you're going after all the easy-to-get links you can find. I think a few of the big directories are still worthwhile to help round out your link profile but you're much better off in the long run looking for sites that your target audience uses and could actually drive a few visitors back to your site.

Local directories and business sites are still valuable, especially if you are local business, but generic no-name directories that take any and everyone are pretty much a waste of even the little time and effort you put into finding them.

The main thing that matters is you are submitting to directories that have an editorial policy! If they are full of junk, and not well categorized, there is little value. But I still continue to be able to submit to directories and rank for keywords. It works, but you have to learn the ropes. Submitting to directory networks or paying some service to submit can have real drawbacks. I always recommend info.vilesilencer.com as a great source of directories where you can submit.
