Problems and Mistakes with SEO

I'm looking into SEO our websites 3 month now. We've done good on-page optimizing and are starting now off-page.

The network receives about 30 million page impressions with 3 million visits (google analytics figures) a month and has one top-domain and several sub-domains that are used by the visitors almost as a seperate site. Until recently we did very little SEO actively for almost 10 years.

Now I'm looking at the rankings and amount of traffic from google (around 40% of all traffic) and I'm wondering what went wrong in the last years and how to correct it.

Some things I try to figure out:

1. there is not one single page that has a PR of more than 4. For a network of that size, I feel that is pretty odd. What could have prevented a better page rank, for say the main domain or the strongest sub-domain?

2. we have the largest forum in Germany for a certain niche (keyword) with several millions threads, running for 8 years now. When I search for "keyword forum" a blog site appears before us, only with some content regarind other forum threads and 2 forwardet domains (keywordforum.de and keyword-forum.de) in Germany.
What could be the reason, that this little blog ranks better than your massive forum. Especially what could we have done wrong? (I'm thinking about bad outgoing links, lots of 404 and such problems)

Don't look at PageRank as a measurement of how well your site is going. It's not a good metric.

I had a very large site that took me years to grow to PR6, and one morning I woke up and I was PR3. This was several months ago. My traffic and keyword phrase rankings stayed the same. I think Google just did a little "adjustment" to freak us all out.

      Hi Narayan,

I agree with ehicks727, It's foolish to chase PR, quality traffic is much more important and should be your measure.

If your network has a lot of deep links, you are much better off than having a single page that receives all those links. Much better to have a thousand different pages that are on the 1st page of SERP than just one.

Page rank isn't all that important at all. The end result is the number of user that visit your site. Getting tons of visitors will provide you with a steady cash flow with google adsense (of whichever program your using to monetize your blog/site).
