Link Wheels Good or Bad?

Hi Everyone,
I was wondering how are link wheels doing with this new Google era? I am looking to find out if both closed ended, open ended, open ended with last site linking to another string of sites linked together etc etc still work or get slammed by Google? Also what is the best number of sites to have in the wheel ? 3 or 4 or 6 or more sites in the wheel? Your thoughts and recent experiences most appreciated.
Thanks

I did not use link wheel from a long time as now I am promoted from only a link builder to a technical SEO. Well, in the earlier months of this year I used to create back links from link wheel and it is always effective and beneficial for me. I used 4 to 5 websites and the last one was open ended. This is all I wanted to share. Hope it helps. Thanks

I suggest you don't try link wheel for the reason that they sound bad and I thought were generally considered to be black hat SEO Technique.

If done right, they're not bad at all.

Link wheel is actually a sensitive technique to use. It can give you page rank but a fetal step can cause your site damage.

Link wheels work just fine if they are quality. Look for:

    1. Web sites with decent PageRank
    2. Web site where your new pages remain and don't get deleted

I prefer a layered approach like this:

    xxxxxxx
    xxxxx
    xxxx
    xxx
    xx
    x (money site)

You have to be very careful when doing link wheels. Google now picks up on that and can penalize you if not done right. i actually do a tiered linking approach.

Worth a try and a lot safer these days than blasting lots of links directly to the money site. I usually use articles or press releases as the first layer then blast that layer with manual blog comments, forum profiles and social bookmarking.

No link activity is bad as long as you are doing it properly

Linkwheel is soooo 2000's Like SeoSteveO said, look into link pyramids or tiered linking.. same concept, just a bigger picture.
