what SEO work is needed for local search engine ranking? do you think its the same like the building backlinks through article submission, directory submission, bookmarking etc. or we have also submit site to local directory? Do you think local social networking site also helpful?

    Local business listings would help you as well. Another is linking your site to other blogs that are promoting in your area. Try to contact them for guest post especially if the site is related to your business.

      Same as any normal SEO techniques, just stay away from blackhat. See if there are any online directories for your area because that will be relevant. If you have a store/office location then I recommend signing up to Google Places to get listed (if city or town locality).

      I think you probably should not speak about things you do not know or understand. Local SEO, if you are talking about SEO for a specific town or local market, is not the same as regular SEO. You need to have a Google Places (now Google+ for Business) listing that is 100% complete. After that, your #1 priority needs to be citations.

    the process is the same , add more local directories and local classified ads , also local blog for blogcomment

    Try to associate your website, in all possible ways, with the city or the location you are planing to do business in. Some methods have already been named by other forum posters: guest blogging from local websites, registering in local directories etc. But the most important thing is to do a proper Google+ Local registration. That's how you first get on the map and that's how you get into the local rankings. :-)

      If you are looking for local business then you might want to consider creating a Google+ account and a google+ business page. Optimize it so that your keywords are on their and you will be on the 1st page for your business locally.

      Google+ Local Page will have a direct affect on how you rank in Google local search and integrate with your Google Places page highly in Google Maps. So if your a plumber in atlanta, when someone in atlanta types in plumber in the search your google+ page will show up.

    One of the most important things that you ALL are missing is the magic of Google Authorship. I can't believe nobody here is talking about it. Whether local or not, EVERY website should implement Google Authorship to their site. Amen!

    Mike and Steve are right, local SEO is quite different from location-agnostic SEO. So, yes, your top priority should be getting a local listing (on Google+) and looking for citations.

    I'd also say try to get good ratings and plenty of reviews either at G+ or at third-party review sites.

    Also, if you're seriously planning to do Local, you'd better take a look at Mike Blumenthal's or David Mihm's blog to see what ranking factors matter for local. As was just said, they are quite different from what's important for regular SEO.
