Am I a victim of Google Dance?

For the last three weeks I have lost around 30% of my traffic and was wondering if it could be the 'Google dance'. Just prior to this happening I did some linkbuilding (clean links, not spammy) and I think it might the sudden extra link activity relative to before that might have caused this.

Then again, I also did two other things roughly the same time. I rearranged a few of the categories of the blog (it did not change the urls as the category is not in the url itself) and also started showing a CPM banner ad at the same time. I made a backup of the site just prior to doing all these things and am thinking it might be better to restore to it back to that point as I will only lose a few posts but it will undo the changes, one of which may be causing the traffic loss issue.

  • This is a difficult one to judge. Last week there were many people reporting the same thing, that they had a drop in traffic and apparently a Google update was to blame. Google deny this update but many people had reported a similar drop like yourself, so it could be a coincidence that it happened at the same time a you doing these changes.

My traffic drop happened 3 weeks ago, not last week.

Did you get any messages in WMTs? Also what kind of backlinks did you build and how many?

Too many variables to say. At first glance, based on what you wrote, it is a google dance.

Your in the post penguin world now. Things are different. VERY DIFFERENT.

So, you want to improve your google search engine rankings without getting penalized? Then you need to focus on writing high quality, relevant and unique content and forget about backlink building.

This is truly the only safe way to build your traffic and improve your search engine results without getting penalized.

As you have changed your On-Page SEO (As you re-arrange the things, some changes are there) & Off-Page SEO (As you get links). It is of course, resulted kind of "Google dance". It is better that you didn't change your URL.

This method may OR may not work for you, just try & see, as there are various factors play a role in deciding :

To over-come this, keep on getting backlinks everyday, get links to your inner pages, category pages, home pages and etc. Do NOT use your main keywords as your anchor text, use secondary keywords or "Click here" or etc... texts or long phrases to link back. Keep going.... I would recommend to go ahead on this way for a week or two and make sure you are getting links everyday and ping your links, so Google can see progress. Then, you may get your rank back... Good luck...

30% percent traffic loss cannot be Google Dance. Must be Panda impact.

Even though Traffic and Rank are strongly related, Google dance is not about the TRAFFIC, it is about the RANKINGS - e.g when your site's ranking position goes up and down. Have you been watching your rankings? What have they been? How much did they drop?

it's when your site's ranking position goes up and down on Google - it "dances" until it settles

Could be anything. I would need your site and a detailed list of changes.

Last month i changed the design on one of my sites and i lost the rankings for all of my internal pages for about a week. They came back.

There havent been any corresponding penguin or panda updates this week. So most likely it is something temporary. Its impossible to tell without taking a detailed look at your site and what you have been doing though.

If you want me to take a look, feel free to get in contact.
