Google adwords keyword tool is the best free keyword research tool.
While choosing the right keywords, consider following points.
    Type of business
    business area
    Targeted products /services
    targeted audience etc.

Just using keyword tools is a limited way to research, depending on the type of search different dynamics will come into play and you can't just rely on keyword based research to know what you need to do.

Finding decent keywords is possible with Google adwords tool but it takes a lot of time to find good keywords.

    Here is what I do.

    1) Import related keywords from google adwords tool into a keyword research software/ tool. I use my own custom software for this, but you can use any popular software available in the market. I think Market Samurai can do this too.

    2) Download data like all in url, exact phrase count, in title count for all the keywords. You will need a lot of proxies for this step. Next, remove keywords that you think are too high competition. I use keywords that have inurl and intitle count below 50,000.

    3) Next I check first page competition for these keywords. Again, you need to choose keywords that you think you can rank. For e.g. I look for a couple of pages with pr 0 on page 1. This indicates that the keyword is easy to rank. You can use tools like free version of traffic travis for this step.

    4) You now have good low competition keywords!

Google Adwords Keyword Tool + Traffic Travis + LibreOffice Calc. All free and able to do what any paid tool can. And usually much faster.

Also, when it comes to KW research don't get stuck on "volume." In other words, don't only go after highly searched keywords. A MUCH better strategy is to target low volume but buyer oriented KW's. Random example: "Samsung 42LCDx9 best price"

Even if you're going after keywords with less than 500 searches a month they'll start to add up. And they're usually very easy to rank for.

Login into your google account and use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to extract more results. Now open new tab in your browser and checkout top 10 competitors websites for your keyword. Make a list of those websites and use url's of those websites in Google Adwords Keyword Tool to extract keyword used by your competitors. After that you can finalize few good keywords with low competition from that list or use them for searching more specific results according to new trend in your niche.

Google Keywords tools ( https://adwords.google.com/o/Targeti...=KEYWORD_IDEAS ) are the best free tools.

WebFire's Keyword tools ( WebFire - Get Instant Free Exposure on Page 1 of Google ) are the best paid tools.

Also, make sure you are not just targeting good keywords with low competition, but are also targeting "buyer keywords" (that is, keywords people are likely to search when looking to make a purchase, instead of when simply researching).

I can recommend SE Cockpit as one of the best keyword tools.
The Google keyword tool is good also, although it's competition data is misleading.

The problem with SE Cockpit is that it costs like 97 dollars a month.

I need to check out the webfire keyword tool. Can't comment on that now.

The competition data is what separates the keyword tools. The better the competition rankings, the better the tool. The other keyword factors, search volume, CPC, exact match, etc., you can get from the Google Keyword tool.

$97 a month is really expensive unless you're already doing well and NEED the service. I've heard good things about it though.
