number of keywords etc

What is the optimum number of:

1) Keywords

2) Characters in 'title tag'

I've used three 'optimisers' and if I get my site 100% in one the others say 'too many keywords' etc and so on.

Is there a definitive answer?

In my view of point , Per web 3 keywords is enough, title tag character should be 66 to 80 , description should be 170 .

Not More Than 3 Medium Tail Keyowrd with 150-170 Characters of Description.

Don't pay attention to numbers. Just do things naturally.
Believe me, most people end up over-optimizing these things which further harms the rankings.

  Agreed. If its longer thats ok, the engines still read it.

  Thanks all. Reason for asking was that the site had 'slipped' away to page 3 & various 'site checkers' seemed to contradict each other as to 'what is best'.
  
  I have made a few 'little alterations' to my title and descrition based on the info' in this thread. My prefered (submit express) checker says all is good, 90-100% in all fields.
  
  I have generated a fresh sitemap.xml & that is now 'pending' with google.
  
  Fingers crossed I'll start to climb again.

The is "no best".

Have your "main keyword" in the title and create GOOD, compelling content. Forget factors such as "keyword density" and other nonsense, google is getting bad ESPECIALLY when it comes to over-optimization now.

Instead of worrying about those things just make articles better and also longer.
