Which should I try ranking for?

Should I rank for a keyword with more searches per month, but is harder to get into, yet does not have a huge keyword density per page on authority sites, or try ranking for sites that have less searches, yet hardly have and authority sites? My site name includes one part of the search term, yet in both cases none of the top sites do. Which should I go for? Both are long tail keywords, but they are to different degrees. Should I try two rank for two medicore terms, on one excellent term first?
