Using 301 redirects to divide 2 websites

I have 2 domains, domain 1 for a main niche, and domain 2 for a related subniche. They are both hosted on the same IP and registered with the same Namecheap account and at one time had the same adsense and analytics account. So google should know they are all mine. Plus one has a link or 2 to the other.
Domain 1 has around 30 pages and a lot of it is the same content as domain 2 which is a larger site at over 200 pages. Domain 1 gets a lot of its search traffic from this similar content and competes for the same keywords.
Both domains are PR4 and doing well in the serps. I am concerned that I am going to eventually get slapped for having similar content on multiple domains. It's not duplicate, just quite blatantly the same info worded differently. I think this is why my adsense account got canned a year ago. Back then there were even more domains involved.
Would it be a good idea to 301 redirect that similar content on domain 1 to domain 2? Or would it be better to minimize the similarity of the content and just put links from domain 1 to domain 2. I am afraid that minimizing the amount of content will ultimately reduce traffic. Or am I just paranoid and does it really matter that the content is similar?
Both 1 and 2 also have some similar content to domain 3. So it gets more complicated but I think the answer would be the same for that.
Also does a 301 redirect work for passing seo juice if the target is a similar article on the new domain but not the exact article as the original?
