Stupid ads

Believe it or not, after close to 10 years on the web, I have finally signed up and set up AdSense on my site. So, yes, I'm new to this...
Hence the question :
My registration with AdSense was only approved 24 hours ago.
I set up a Leaderboard (728x90) ad on my homepage thinking I'd get a set of 4-5 ads a pageview.
What I'm getting is one unique massive ad taking up the entire leaderboard and none of the ads are minimally relevant to my site or its content.
How exactly does an IM network attract ads for "dog collars" or "bags under your eyes"...?
What am I doing wrong here? Or does it take time for AdSense to catch on to my site's content?
