Unexpectedly Fast Google Ranking, Please Explain.

Hi,

Yesterday, I put up a joke about the Mayan calendar on one of my websites that is relatively new and hasn't had anything done for it except in very basic SEO such as keywords and description. Consequently, the site got very little traffic.

I put the joke on my site at about 10 AM central time and added one or two very basic keywords. By 1 PM, that page was ranked number 5 on the first page of Google and has been getting significant traffic since. Checking the status today, it is hovering between 1 and 3 and traffic is still great.

My question for you SEO and ranking experts is: How did this happen so quickly? I thought Google indexing took a while, especially for a site with 0 page rank and no backlinks, and for keywords that are probably getting a lot of searches right now. I would like to know what I did right so that I can repeat my page 1 success!

    Google indexing can be instant. It all depends on when they're spiders show up.

    I assume you ranked highly because there was no real competition (backlinks) for the phrase.

    Fast rankings are normal - whether it stays there or not is the question. If it does then there just isn't any competition for the term, if there is - you'll see it drop off again.

    Google often puts new content high in the index to get a feel for if people like it and then they stick it where it belongs.

      It is because your post is newsworthy, Google likes that. You say you considered keywords, you obviously just hit the right note. However, the world is going to end tonight so I'd find a way to moneytize it quick

        It figures that I would get it right as the last thing I do!

        BTW, thanks for the replies. It's good to know that Google can be fast when they really like what you're talking about.

      The site has gotten about 800 hits today. While for many of you that might not be much, like I said in my initial post, the site was just kind of sitting there without virtually any traffic previously. So, I was really surprised how quickly it got to near the top of Google and how quickly that happened.

    Are you Mayan? Perhaps one of your relatives is Mayan. Perhaps the Mayan's God is smiling at you and rewarding you for the great publicity.

    I wouldn't be surprised if tomorrow before it all goes up in smoke the mailman delivers an asbestos suit to you. It will be a mystery gift from Big Maya. It will help you survive. But I don't know why you would want to survive.

    Farewell, and don't forget to pack a little bacon. It'll be a perfect temperature for bacon.
