IP Canonicalization ???

Should I be worried about this error?

I have other domains on the server, and it has this one IP.

What are your thoughts?

It's pretty much a non-issue.

The only reason a site would be indexed by IP address is if it didn't have DNS set up and it was submitted or linked to via its IP address.

Given that the majority of websites run on shared hosting where one IP address can serve hundreds of different websites, it really isn't an issue.

I think the site you ran that report on is probably just trying to scare people into buying whatever products/services they offer.

IP canonicalization is the same as URL canonicalization. You should use permanent redirects or canonicalization to resolve to one central URL.

Here is the info I give to my clients:

Canonicalization is the process of picking the best url when there are several choices, and it usually refers to home pages. For example, most people would consider these the same urls:
- www.example.com
- example.com/
- www.example.com/index.html
- example.com/home.asp
But technically all of these urls are different. A web server could return completely different content for all the urls above. When a search engine“canonicalizes” a url, they try to pick the url that seems like the best representative from that set.

Once decided which url is the main one the code in the header of all site pages should follow this convention: <link rel="canonical" href="http://www.yourdomain.com/xxxx" /> and be used especially for the target pages if they have the same issues per the examples above.

The Canonical URL tag attribute is similar in many ways to a 301 redirect from an SEO perspective. In essence, you're telling the engines that multiple pages should be considered as one (which a 301 does), without actually redirecting visitors to the new URL (often saving your dev staff considerable heartache when new pages are created). There are some differences, though:
- Whereas a 301 redirect re-points all traffic (bots and human visitors), the Canonical URL tag is just for engines, meaning you can still separately track visitors to the unique URL versions.
- A 301 is a much stronger signal that multiple pages have a single, canonical source. While the engines are certainly planning to support this new tag and trust the intent of site owners, there will be limitations.
- 301s carry cross-domain functionality, meaning you can redirect a page at domain1.com to domain2.com and carry over those search engine metrics. This is NOT THE CASE with the Canonical URL tag, which operates exclusively on a single root domain (it will carry over across subfolders and subdomains).
To help the search engines we need to pick the url that you want and use that url consistently across the entire site. For example, don’t make half of your links go to Example Domain and the other half go to Example Domain. Instead, pick the url you prefer and always use that format for all internal links.

  Google doesn't need help, rarely gets confused.

Found the source site at IP Canonicalization Test - SEO Site Checkup

The same result would display for >=99.999999999% of all websites in existence.

Someone should alert Google.com that they don't redirect their IP address either!!! :rolleyes:

IP canonicalization is another critical step to good website SEO. It happens when your site’s IP address doesn’t redirect to its traditional URL.
