Google has shot himself in the foot. Because what a search engine user wants? He/she wants ALL the Internet at the fingertips, mapped and available. Yes, it would be good to have a notice: this site contains a virus, this has copyright problems etc., but all should be available. Any censorship is like taking off parts of a geographical map by reasoning that the areas are dangerous or the entry is prohibited. Even if it is, I still want to see them on the map. Bing wins on this.

Sunray... You are dangerously close to endorsing piracy. You may want to rethink that position before posting again on this subject in this forum.

I'm not. And I have my own negative experiencies on it when my sofware program lost most of the sales after warez sites listed it. I'm absolutely against it, but still stating the fact that this act is not good for Google. If I had their shares, I'd start selling tomorrow.

I think I know what you mean - you want to see unfiltered results. But you are a very small minority of people out there.

Every few months someone complains that a new tactic by Google will be the death of Google but it never happens that way.

Google dominates search and owns the two biggest search engines on the planet (google.com and youtube.com). I do most of my PPC ads on Bing and can tell you that it's a top notch platform but nowhere near as effective as Google AdWords.

In spite of all the algo updates, AdWords bans etc. Google grows just fine. They're targetting mass consumers. Think of your next door neighbor (who isn't a SEO or affilialte marketer or member of the EFF) next time you wonder why Google does what Google does.

It's catering to their demographic (and in some cases as afraid of the FTC and Federal government as the rest of us).

A quote from the comments in the OPs link.

"These DMCA notices are not final. They can be accusations and non-substantial. If Google will be using this data, it will be seriously erroneous - the birth of SEO and honest publishers worst fear - Negative DMCA!"

That birth happened many moons ago. The Negative DMCA child is already very large

I have some sympathy for your position because of my extreme distaste for Google and censorship.

However, simply labeling a site as having copyright problems is rather pointless, especially from the perspective of those whose material has been ripped-off.

It's not a question of an area being dangerouse, etc. Copyright laws are in place for a reason, as you know. You can still see them, but don't you think it's best to see the lawful and original content?

Also, your position, by extension, would nullify and render useless copyright laws. Your position seems to imply that it's all right to allow infringed content for the sake of avoiding censorship. It's not censorship, it's protecting copyrighted information/content. It's refusing to condone the actions of people who steal content.

Censorship in the truest sense would be preventing original copyrighted works. That has occurred but it's another conversation.

It's about time. Long overdue. I am sick of many of my own ebooks being pirated and sold from sites using black hat methods to rank high in search results.

actually anyone who is ripping off and reposting content illegally is easy to see on their website, what type of place it is. I hunt down pirates and shut them down.

While I do agree that this type of stuff shouldn't be available on the web, this kinda sounds like antitrust law violation to me.

Think about this - MILLIONS of videos are wrongfully uploaded to youtube each and every day, and eventually the videos are seen by the rightful owner, who then slaps a DMCA at them.

Yet because google owns YT, they aren't dropping in ranking at all.

So what gives? Do these new updates only apply to sites that Google doesnt own?? Clearly an issue in my opinion..

You know what, I am sick and tired of my content being stolen and published elsewhere and then ranking above my original posts. I have to agree with others that this seems to be one useful update.

Lets wait and see how Google screws this one up!...

High time! I have seen my posts and content written for Ezine and other directories/websites being republished so many times. There was a point of time when there were 9 sites which copied my article from Ezine, and the best part was that 3 of those sites ranked higher than my Ezine article. I hope this update brings them all down and gives genuine people/original authors their long overdue credit.
