Did a backlink check and found a bunch of very funky links from strange places - is this normal or something to worry about?

Can anyone recommend a reputable backlink checker?

ahrefs if my personal favorite.

Could be negative SEO (I hope not)

Avanahall,

So you aren’t aware of how these links were built? Sometimes strange websites will post links from news articles or other content on their own domains which results in a backlink to your site. If you think they are spam sites or just don’t want the links you can always use Google’s disavow links tool.

Rank tracker has a good backlink checker. If you aren’t receiving warnings from Web Master Tools (assuming your site is registered there) I wouldn’t worry about it too much.

What do you mean by "funky links from strange places"? Can you be more specific? What niche is your website in?

Here are a few backlink checker that might help you: opensiteexplorer.org, linkdiagnosis.com, backlinkwatch.com, ahrefs.com. majesticseo.com etc (all of them offer free versions that can be quite useful).

Hmm that sounds like something to worry about come the next Google update!

Backlink Checker, Yahoo Site Explorer Alternative Tool 2012 is the tool I would most recommend. Take a look and see what can be found from a checkup.
