Google has been updating so much that I no longer use them for searching. I've switched over to duckduckgo, better results.

The fact is they will update and when they do the IM world will tighten up even more. The fact is that if you want to stay ahead of the game and maintain a high rank on Google, you have to focus on quality content and organic traffic and backlinks.

Crap SEO will not last long on today's internet.

Google updates their algorithm 500+ times a year, they tweet it, but it does not give you much info.

Just don't' publish garbage on the internet, or try and game the system, and you shouldn't need to worry about it.

Here is a link to read through if you want

Seems like they roll out a new update about every 3 days.

    What Google wants:

    - Original and quality content. Well researched and informative.
    - Quality backlinks. No more spam low quality backlinks.
    - Few ads. Especially no ads above the fold (which is funny because Google has all their ads above the fold). They also don't like excessive affiliate links.

They also want your website to run smoothly and fast. They want users to stay on your website and social share your website with their friends.

The February 23rd 2011 Penguin update taught me not to take google for granted and build email lists. I've captured about 19,000 emails the last few month which really helps keep traffic flowing.

      1) Well researched and informative content... sounds good, but highly unlikely. Yahoo answers ranks for many keywords with only a few lines of text.
      2) Well... I hope this is true.
      3) Few ads?... Answers.com has ads above the fold (unless, of course, i'm misunderstanding what "above the fold" means)

That is not true at all. There is plenty of worthwhile content that is neither informative or researched one bit, but Google loves.

Twitter, Facebook, the Onion, T-shirt Hell, Amazon.... I could go on.

I would say a new update is definitely on the move. It would be out before January end for sure.

I have a e commerce site I bought a couple of years ago selling golf equipment. It has a page rank of 3 and is well back linked etc. I had it upgraded last year and went live on 29th April 2012. The traffic dropped by 90% and has stayed at about 80% down ever since. Prior to the upgrade there was not much SEO done because the site architecture was "old Fashioned" frames etc. the site was 301 redirected properly etc same URL
I have been told that the site was previously over optimized and the back links anchor text is not correct and that is the problem. I have been told by Google that I have not got a manual penalty but I have tried everything to sort it out but SEO companies are asking money that I do not have to put it right with no certainty that they will be successful. the keywords are up and down like yoyos. I am close to giving up because I have nearly run out of cash. Any Ideas out there.

When you say ecommerce site is that drop shipping, your own product, or an IM site like Amazon affiliates? Just curious.

You say you have 301 redirects, so your changing old URLs that might have external backlinks. Maybe you missed a few important redirects (IDK), try a sitewide 301 redirect to catch any 404 pages (broken URLs) that might have external links pointing at them. Can't hurt to test.
