Analyzing Keyword Competition.

I'm considering targeting a keyword for a product that has the Amazon page and the official site in the first two positions and Sears in the four position.

According to the Unstoppable Affiliate program, these are signs that the keyword is less competitive and thus easier to rank for. Now I've heard from other sources that sites like Amazon, Sears, and the official site in the results make the keyword more competitive and thus harder to rank for.

Which of these two viewpoints is closer to the truth?

  • Will,

It would seem that if sites like Sears and Amazon are competing for a keyword, it would be a competitive keyword. Have you tried any other methods besides the Affiliate resource?

If you are doing it by hand you could try using either the KEI (Keyword effectiveness index) or a results to searches method. The KEI method is great for measuring competitiveness of keywords and keyword phrases. Results to searches is slightly less accurate however it is a more straight forward formula.

This link explains the KEI method,

Results to searches is tedious but it can offer some insights into your chosen list of keywords. It will show you words that are moderately competitive with high search volume.
