Protecting Personal Images

I plan on using some of my own personal images on a new site (instead of only amazon images), but have no idea how to make sure they aren't used without my permission.

What's the best thing to do in this situation?

The only thing I can think of is to do the same as the stock image sites - they watermark the images that are displayed.

Anything that's on the web can potentially get copied and re-used.

TinEye does searches for duplicate images but not sure if they offer a Copyscape equivalent (I got confused on their pricing and services page).

GIMP is free and works just as well as Photoshop in my opinion so if you don't have it you can download it for free. Then go to Add a Text Watermark in GIMP - How to Apply a Text Watermark to Your Photos in GIMP and it will tell you how to add an opaque watermark to your photos.

You can:
- Add a watermarks
- Embed your metadata in the photos. This depends on the camera and your editing software
- File a DMCA takedown notice to have them removed
- Use photo slideshow components/plugins that do not allow downloading or right click. Here is an example: Simple Image Gallery Pro - JoomlaWorks
There is no way to stop someone from copying your images online as they can always take a screenshot.

If the images are good, they will get stolen no doubt. To reduce this risk of this happening I suggest that you put a unique code in the image file names eg. photo-name-for-seo-x12345abcd.jpg so that you can find them on other sites using Google image search and then do the DCMA take-down thing (most images thieves are lazy and won't rename the images.

The other tip is to use a branding overlay on the image that stops other people using it. Here's an example. It's a lot more effort but the image would be pretty safe from theft
