How effective Yahoo Answers is for generating:

(i) traffic; and

(ii) back-links

    You won't get ranking because from Yahoo answers. Although you will get a lot of traffic if you post proper answers.

    Backlinks won't give you anything because they are no-follow.

    Answers themselves will generate a lot of visitors. I am using them a lot and even answers from two years ago are still getting traffic.

    I already have level 5 account with them and soon to get level 6. This helps to boost credibility and more traffic but it took me months of hard work to achieve this level. Now I am getting around 10k visitors a month to all my web properties.

    If I give a proper short answer and in each answer link it to the relevant page of my authority site for detailed information, will I get banned.

    I tend to answer 5 questions a day on Yahoo Answers and have done so for the previous year/year and a half, and see a steady stream of 5-10 hits from my questions a day per site.

    So for 5 questions I would use 5 different links to either of my few websites. I spread it out and add a link to an article or a page on a blog or my sites 5 a day and most likely do this and have done this for 5 days a week sometimes 6.

    Questions will get votes and your link will get more exposure that way so answer the questions to the best of your ability.

    I can't agree that YA is not a powerful way to both drive traffic and build your backlinks! Building traffic is normal if you answer the questions and your comment is helpful. But, not only this, no matter the backlinks are no-follow, Google would like to see that NOT only dofollow backlinks link to your websites. This way your SEO strategy would look more "normal" for Google!

    Yahoo Answers can generate huge amount of targeted traffic if used properly and effectively. Just need some steady work there.

    Moreover that 'nofollow' backlink from Yahoo Answers help to diversify your backlink profile, which is also good from the SEO point of view.

    Last but not least; being a highly authority site itself Yahoo Answers sometimes rank on Google SERP without any backlink. That is the biggest advantage of Yahoo Answering in my opinion.
