You need to try it out yourself...SEO is not about only blog commenting...many things plays apart..if you depend on blog commenting only, i don't think you will see the result that you wish for...

Not sure I would recommend it since Google introduced Panda and Penguin. Or if you do it do it on a smaller scale as not to arouse the suspicion of Big G that you are link spamming.

    What madstan said.

It once worked but Google cracked down on it. Still works for increasing traffic but nothing major. Where you might want to do blog commenting is to build relationships with webmasters. Down the road they might reward you with a link,. That in itself would have SEO value

Works good if the backlinks are do-follow... It will help you getting your site ranked but SEO isn't all about blog commenting. You need to learn many other things.

Yes it still works, as long as you're making good comments.

Is the best way? No. None of the individual seo methods are the best. The best way is to implement a little bit of every seo method. Its all about diversity, and being natural.

Of course it works. Don't spam, just comment on a few related blogs now and then and it will be alright.

If you make comments on relevant sites, or on sites which are really good, it would be beneficial. Doing Comments on high PR spammy sites just to get links will harm your sites.

    Yeah they still work.

There are more effective link building methods, but having comments is a good part of a balanced link building approach.

I mainly focus on building link tiers (Web 2.0s), and getting high pr/authority links in whatever way i can. IE buy them most of the time, lol.

To the best of my knowledge, the answer is sound YES as long you don't do spamming, but you don't need to focus on it as major backlink build tactic, instead you can do more of guest posting. Hope this helps.

It can definitely help as long as you're doing it the right way. In other words, avoid using any automated tools and / or leaving junk comments on "auto approve" blogs.

Target active, moderated blogs and make sure you're leaving comments that you'd approve on your own blogs.

I have found that blog commenting can really help you out. However, like everyone has already mentioned you cannot be SPAMMY at all. If you are they will get your site kicked and even a personal blog on sites like Wordpress hit hard for SPAM.

Once a while i still will do some old ways which is blog comment but it not work that effective anymore compare to last time cause mostly high pr site afraid spammer to spoilt the quality of their site by bringing lot of not related link in , so they set their blog to no follow.
That is why is hard to find related and high PR blog which give do follow links.

My site moved from result #9 on google to #3 by posting manually 1-4 comments a day on high pr page articles (yes page, not rootdomain pr), after carefully reading the article and placing an actual legit comment on it. So blog commenting still has some value imo. Done that for nearly 2 weeks now, 80% of the comments get approved.

Here's how you do it step by step:
    1. find high pr page articles that are somehow related to your niche
    2. check if they are DoFollow or not, if not move along
    3. place your comment in such way that it seems legit, for example the article is about car batteries and its detailed into the types and brands of car batteries etc.

    DO:
"hey i found your website searching info on my car battery, i see you wrote something about brand "brand here", are those really worth buying? I don't have much knowledge about this subject, i will be very thankful if you can reply my comment with an answare, i appreciate answares from people who actually know something about this."

    DO NOT:
"hey cool blog, please check out mine too"

    WHY:
When you ask a question to something specific inside the article webmasters intend to approve you comment just so they can reply to your question, this is a very good tip and you should use it, it will get you lots of comments approved and published!

Dont overdo this, combine this with a bit of free submissions here and there. also try tweaking the anchor text from time to time.

    goodluck

If your blog comments contribute to a healthy discussion on other people's blog, there's no way of being penalized from anyone for that. Gains are positive in many different ways:
        - you get part of the traffic
        - you get authority link to your site/page
        - you get boost in rankings as a result of both

However, it is difficult to contribute if you know little or nothing about the topic that is being discussed on authority sites/pages. Admins are very "picky" in terms of what discussion/comment is getting approved - you need to show some brain there

If the back-links are do-follow in the blog comments then it is good. but don't expect from blog comments only. concentrate upon other activities also like forum commenting, social media marketing, social bookmarking, video sharing etc.

    Hello Friend,

Blog commenting is not the only way through which you can do SEO. By commenting on relevant blog or relevant post you may get some good number of traffic but to make your article or post SEO optimized you must need to follow all the seo techniques.
You must need to follow the rules for SEO.If you are using WordPress then there is some useful plugin which may help you to do seo. I can give you some beautiful but easy tips:

    1. Try to keep the keyword in your post title.
    2. Try to keep a picture and name it using that keyword.
3.While naming the picture use "_" in between the words.
    4. Keep the keyword in the heading paragraph.
    5. Keep the keyword at least 3 times in the post.
    6. You article must be above 300 words.

The above tips are just primary seo tips for the begineers but very helpful.

Blog commenting is still working from what I have seen as long as they are from reputable websites that have PR. It is always important to use different types of backlinks along with blog comments to get the best results. I like to use article links, blog comment links, and social media based links. They still seem to perform well in 2013, and I think they will continue in the future. They just need to be from authoritative sites that have good PR.

For me, blog commenting is more about immersing yourself in a community within your niche. If you truly have great content to offer, and you take active part in discussions that are happening all over the web, then you will get noticed by others in time. Blog commenting is just another part of this overall process of immersion inside your niche.

By doing blog commenting you get benefit of page ranks, as blogs have high pr..... but you don't have option to use anchor text, you can use your name in the place of anchor text, this is the main problem I face with blog commenting on Wordpress blogs.

It never stopped working. Hell, if you blast 1m comments/trackbacks in a day you'll probably rank page 1 for a few days on most terms before the algo catches up and bans you.

The key is slow, related, and steady comments.

Still blog commenting is worth for SEO. But when you use automated tool like scrapebox, you must use anonymous private proxies to avoid footprints. Otherwise you may invite google penalty. Blog commenting must be mix of both no-follow and do-follow.

It never stopped working. Blog comments from high PR, relevant pages (not sub-domains) not only helps your site with backlinks but also drives targeted traffic to you.

In my opinion, it's the easiest backlink on the planet. With SEO Quake, I can find several, niche relevant sites within minutes and they're so easy to get approved. My trick is to use lots of flattery (ego boost) and ask questions.

Blog comments work just fine, post a comment about the article and no the blogs you post on doesn't have to be related at all.

I know its against what most people say here... But most people here are just parrots giving advice that they have read somewhere and make sense to them. They never tested anything in SEO in their lives.

I have a lot of local based websites and i use blogcomments as one of my methods to promote my site, and i post to high PR SEO blogs, landscaping blogs and car blogs... just use a pen name as your anchor text, that has two advantages, the first is your % of achor keywords goes down, which allows you to have more links with anchor on higher quality sites and your post doesn't get deleted because your name is plumber New York.

You're right Dave, the blog comments don't have to be niche related. I don't bother when I'm blogging for my personal sites but I always look for relevancy with my clients.

I comment on plenty of non-niche related blogs without any issues. Most people are super-obsessed about getting backlinks ONLY from niche-related sites. I like to vary things a little.

Though, I do still frequently comment on niche-related blogs for traffic reasons in addition to backlinks. If you're one of the first to comment on a post from a high traffic blog in your niche you can sometimes expect a good amount of REALLY targeted traffic to flow back to you.

Blog comments still work for SEO. My rule is don't make spammy comments and don't place your link in a blog that already spammed heavily especially if you see some porn or buy viagra kind of links on the page. I also prefer to create a list of "commentable" blogs other than wordpress, for me other cms are more helpful since they don't have akismet.

Blog commenting still work if done properly.
have a mix of do follow and no follow links,
only comment on pages/articles/posts which are relevant to the lined page
don't use exact keyword in the link text, spin it little or just add you website name before or after it,
don't spam, try to deliver some useful information related to the topic. even describing your own product/service/page in good way is enough
don't use same comment on all the website (previous practice in 09-10)
try to get link in from the text
and very important, don't use your name as anchor text

      Obviously by asking Google/Bing/Yahoo...
Scrapebox can be used to speed up the process, but you need to research what footprints are available on sites that accept comments in order to identify large number of them. Then, query page rank of scraped pages to detect authority ones, and weed out the garbage. And try to post comments, finally.

If you don't have scrapebox, there's one site that has built-in footprints for blogging platforms, and queries Google based on that + target keyword => Drop My Link - Find sites to create backlinks on
