I am new to Seo and have done a good job learning the basics. When it comes to on page optimization I am very good. Now I have come to backlinking and I have read about all the different strategies to build backlinks. however I have no idea where to start. Some say write comments on related blogs and try to do so on blogs with do follow links. Some say try to be a guest blog poster. Then others swear by article submission. I guess what I'm asking is where should I start with my efforts and what is the best tactic to use with each method.

Social media and web 2.0 are a good place to start don't think there's a lot of value in blog comments any more.

What would you do to get traffic? What kind of links would you build? You'll find there are tons of strategies.. just start with the ones that make sense and also drive traffic back to your site.

Does publishing an article on X, Y, Z blog or article directory drives qualified traffic to your site? If yes, do that every once in a while..

Does involving yourself in forum conversations drive traffic back to your site? Makes sense to do that too then...

Would you develop a software (widget that others can implement in their sites .. or perhaps a niche targeted Wordpress theme) that can increase the link popularity and traffic?

Can you find strategic partners that are willing to do banner / traffic / content exchange with you? Great...

Whatever you do, take into account not only the SEO benefit of having backlinks, but also the direct traffic opportunity.

The only backlinks I build are web 2.0 sites or purchased high page rank domains. When I need backlinnks for those sites I outsource tiered or something similar.

My advice if you are trying to build links is to figure out what you are best at and focus on that and outsource the rest.

Are you good at writing content? Build Web 2.0 properties and hire someone to do cheap backlinks / submissions / social signals for you. (fiverr is great if you know what you are looking for and since you aren't getting them directly to your money site taking down a free web 2.0 site isn't that big of a deal)

You can also write press releases and articles and hire someone else to syndicate them. When you try to do it all you are spreading your talents too thin and it results in low quality.

On the other hand, if you are great and fast at building tiered links, running link blasts, or finding the perfect places to syndicate content you can do all that and outsource the article building, but for someone new at it you would usually be better off writing the content and having someone else push the technical stuff.

That's just how I do it though. It works for my sites, but different things work for different people.

    - On the blog commenting topic: Everyone says blog commenting is worthless and not worth it, but I know a realtor who has ranked his personal blog with multiple local realty keywords with doing absolutely no SEO practices and just commenting and sharing his blog on forums and other blog posts. It still ranks and the site is a PR4. So before you decide that you are going to nix all the blog / forum commenting think of that!
