Simple rank/index quesiton

I am sure this has to have come up here but i didn't know with which terms to look for it. So here it goes:

Lets say you have a website about the human throat and the threatments of it.
And you domain name is throat.com (example)

You want to rank for subkeywords like "throat cancer" but you put the page on a submenu,so the link becomes something like this:throat.com/diseases/throat-cancer/

Will this link/page have more difficulties ranking and indexing because of the subfolder ("diseases") behind the actual page?

    If it doesn't have a direct link to it, then of course yes.
    You would have to have some direct links pointing to it.
    The specifics of url would have little to no difference, as long as it remains meaningful.

    so what you are saying is, the link lenght itself isnt a problem aslong as your backlinks point to the full link?

      yeah, that's what I mean. For a better visibility you may want to place a link directly into your menu. Not in a dropdown. So it would be also accessible from other page. That's the meaning of internal linking. :p

    As long as your website has a path to your pages or you have a sitemap, it does not matter. Here's what matt cutts got to say.

    My understanding is that you want your keywords to appear as early in the url as possible. I wouldn't put it in the subfolder just for the sake of putting it in a subfolder.

    However, what I would probably do is have a page called diseases (or maybe throat-diseases) which links out to pages on specific diseases like throat cancer. And in this case using the subfolder strategy makes sense. And then you can build out your SEO on the main page, the disease page, as well as the individual disease pages. This is if you plan on having multiple diseases on the site. In the long run I think you'll build more SEO value on your site doing it this way. For example, you can build links to the disease page which passes link juice to all of your individual disease pages. So you start building your site as an authority on throat diseases.
