I believe there is something wrong with Webmaster tools - today I also noticed only fraction of backlinks that were visible in webmasters tools before.

6 Feb 2013. - I think there has been one of those nasty Penguins or Pandas knocking about. (Update). I have just lost over 2,000 links! Lucky my overall ranking for the search terms I am targeting has not been too drastically affected. If we all post lists of links that have survived the update, we can all use those site for backlinking?

I'll start the ball rolling by posting my top 30 sites that have survived:

      bookmark4you.com
      tagbox.de
      100zakladok.ru

There isn't any update! This is just a glitch in WMT, but Feb/March is usually when there is carnage in the SEO world so I won't be surprised if a big update hits soon!

Hi Julia, who told you Google webmaster backlink information is unreliable?

  • I noticed the same. Webmaster tools no longer shows links to my homepages.

I believe this is a temporary glitch and links will return. If they don't it would mean that Google is devaluing those links and it is back to the drawing board for most of us.

Google webmaster tools rarely give you accurate data. Like a few others I also think is probably the tool. As long as you don't lose rankings your backlinks are still effective

No one can tell you exactly that how many backlinks do you have. If your site's performance is good and consistent in SERPs, then there is nothing to worry about. For one of my newest blogs, Webmaster Tools show only two backlinks, both from low ranked sites, but it has got PR2. Alexa tells that there are about 60 inbound links, ahrefs.com's data also varies. So ignore these things, like backlinks count and Alexa rank etc., as they are almost useless to care about. Keep an eye on your site's performance only.
