Why Is Google Finding So Many 404's Errors On My Site?

This is really confusing because none of these pages are pages I created, and I'm not even sure where google is finding them.

Like here are a few of them:

At first, it looked like some of the links were coming from images. Like the last one, so I took the links out.

However, I'm noticing that my sitemap doesn't appear to work, and I have no idea where google is even finding a lot of these links.

Right now I have about 57 not found urls and the number seems to go higher everyday.

I have no idea what is causing this, whether its because my theme sucks, or if there is a way to fix all these errors. I have made a lot of custom changes to my code, I remember deleting my feed, but I don't understand where google is even finding most of these dead links.

Can this screw with my ranking?
A lot of the links end with the "%3Ca%20href=" code, and I have no idea what this is or where its coming from.

Thanks guys - Red

It could be links pointing to your domain from before you bought it?

The sitemap link and the feed links are in your footer and that is why Google is crawling those pages. The other links are possibly broken backlinks created by you or whoever does your link building.

This "%3Ca%20" = "<a ", so this code "%3Ca%20href=" is actually "<a href=", which tells me these are in all liklihood broken backlinks. You can 301 redirect them to the appropriate pages or just ignore them.

    Solution from G:

Q: Why am I receiving "Not found" crawl errors for URLs that don't exist on my site?
A: These errors occur when Googlebot tries to access a URL and receives a 404 (Not found) response. This can happen when Googlebot follows an invalid link, which may be mistyped or outdated. If you don't recognize these URLs and/or don't think they should be accessible, you can safely ignore these errors. If, however, you see URLs listed in the 'Not found' section that you recognize and would like crawled, you can click the URL to show more details that we hope you find helpful in identifying and fixing the errors.

If you want get rid of these errors faster, you can 301 redirect incorrect or outdated URLs to the current version of that content, and/or you can contact sites that link to these URLs and ask them to update their links. Note that submitting a URL removal request will not remove these errors from your report. The URL removal tool removes URLs from Google's search results, it does not remove errors from your Webmaster Tools account.

301 redirect would be never ending process if they keep getting created.
These pages are created using a number of things.

These errors, like all crawl errors, seem to make webmasters go gaga.
It's nothing to worry about if these are nonsense pages.

Google attempts to crawl everything and anything. It's no big deal.

I know one frequent way these urls are made, is via searches. Make
sure you have your robots.txt wired so google will not index search
results that people make on your blog.

The way these nonsense pages are created are too long to list, especially
if using a CMS. That's why I always tout good old fashioned hand coding.
It's not as hard as it looks, and php makes updating a breeze. WP is
      prone to creating junk urls.

Google did a fantastic post on this a couple of years ago:

Official Google Webmaster Central Blog: Do 404s hurt my site?

But, even in the most perfect circumstances they happen. I always do
      a custom 404 error page.

If all the urls are just junk looking, it's no big deal. For what reason would
google ever show these urls in search results? Never. They can't crawl 'em.

Get Xenu Link Sleuth (free) & scan your entire site for 404's, it's possible that Google hasn't found all the broken links yet.
