Well in past Directory submission helps lots in SEO and I seen people use this service again and again but since Google make dramatic changes I feel it's useless for me unless it done on high quality one!

Does Google count them as Spam? As now a days people submit lots in those sites which approve listing withing any process.

Not all directories are useless. Google values directory links from authority sites like dmoz, yahoo, botw.

Spamming a thousand rubbish directories is pointless. I have found that you do still get benefit and some traffic from a few quality-picked ones though.

useful for the high PR & high authority such as dmoz, yahoo, etc. But usually most of them are paid one. Dmoz is also difficult to get approved. For me, I prefer to have backlink from sidebar link in the same niche or guess blogging with high PR

Only Directory submission is the not helpful, your website have to live in these directories. Try to find the quality directory which in index & cache by search engine, then submit your website to niche category.

Directory Submission is really good and even holds some importance. It is necessary that you go for niche relevant directories. Also going for country specific directories is a good idea.

Using software or bulk directory submissions are useless now a days. You need to submit PR directories with proper category is quiet effective. Don't ignore directory submission.

Only High PR is not the check point when you doing directory submission. PR is not constant it will be ups & down. I think main thing is directory is index and cache by google, then only you get the weight-edge of directory submission.

Directory submission still works if you take action and do it. It help with strengthen your link base. The best link base method I see is Tier 1 link building and it still work for 2013. Make sure you focus on follow and no follow links cause search engines wants diversity. The most important thing is this start content that people can engage in that build you links automatic for people doing it for you.

If you submit to thousands of directories it will be counted as spam and likely to get you penalized but when you submit to the useful ones with good PR as well as moderation, you won't have any problem and will even experience a sharp increase in ranking.

All the people telling that submitting to directories is important then please back up your claims with some proof.

Google might pretty much think directories are a form of spam:

Web Directory Submission Danger: Analysis of Directories Shows 20% Penalized/Banned by Google | SEOmoz

You only should try only extreme niche focused directories and that's about it.

I would never advise anyone post to more than few directories (waste of time).

Sorry have to agree with KrisN.....submitting to directories is a waste of time as your link is likely to be spinned which then has the potential of your link being targeted of as spam...

The PR of the homepage is insignificant. What matters is the PR of the page where your link will appear.

Don't you think that there is difference in directories having pr5 home page and pr1 home page.

PR5 directory is always beneficial, your listing page would get some pr juice from home page, its authority..

This thing works with pr1 directory to, you would get the result accordingly, i.e. 20% of pr5..

That's not true at all. If it is a PR 0 page it is a PR 0 page. Does not matter if the domain is PR 5 or PR 0. Equally worthless.

The only people that try to convince people otherwise are low quality link sellers. They need people to believe that there is benefit to have a link on ANY page of a high PR domain. Otherwise potential customers would realize that the shitty profile links they sell are worthless.

EDIT: One little caveat to that. If it is a fairly new page on the site that is linked to well from the homepage, it could be useful. The PR toolbar won't actually update until the next PR toolbar update, so although it might say it is a PR 0, it could actually be a page with some PR.

Personally I still use directory submission for link building. I do not think links from a directory can hurt your website. May be the value of the links from a directory page is very less but why should we avoid it if we have enough time to submit our website in directories.

Though I still use directories, it is no longer my main area of link building. I also check the PR of the web directories before spending time to submit a URL.

That's not true at all. If it is a PR 0 page it is a PR 0 page. Does not matter if the domain is PR 5 or PR 0. Equally worthless.
            Completely agree with this point.

I think directory submissions is still useful. It may not be the only way, and you want to make sure you use quality sites, but if you submit to good directories, the backlinks should help. Personally, I stay away from the sites where you pay for instant / quick approval and go with the free submissions, but mostly because I'm afraid google will figure out which directories let you pay for the submission and hurt your rankings in the future.

I guess only few paid directory sites are worthy for submission, free sites are spammed to death or there are plenty of sites are waiting to get indexed and your gonna get PR0. So, keep stay away.

There was a time when people used to blast hundreds of directories with their website link and they used to achieve good ranking with it. Now, you can get good results only if you submit your website into directories which have got good trust level and higher PR. Preferably PR3+ directories.

Directory submission should be part of your strategy but not your MAIN strategy. None of the SEO are as effective as they used to be anymore. That doesn't mean they are totally useless either. Your main strategy should be quality and variety of links.

Directory Submission is always helpful, but after penguin update their is some restriction in directory submission. We have to check the directory before submission, is they are cache or index by google or not, is they provide dofollow links etc.

Directories are not so powerful for SEO, but they can give you a nice keyword density and also you can work on the percent of your dofollow and nofollow backlinks, so if you have time, you can always use directories (also some extra visitors are a bonus!)

Yes, directory submissions are useful for seo. It is advisable to post to directories which has a good page rank( ie PR>3). Else posting on sites with less page rank, gives no value for the submissions.

I wouldn't bother at all with directory submissions - especially those types of: "submit to 1000 directories for $50" offers. However, it is definitely useful to submit to a few high quality directories - you will have to pay something around $20-$50 for each. The Yahoo directory is also great, but a bit expensive.

Directory submission technique is still valuable in terms of seo if done the right way. You have to submit to those high quality directories that does not run to increase their "total links" count.
