It Just Doesn't Make Any Sense

Ok, so after a long time away from doing online marketing, (got my ass kicked last time) I finally worked up the courage to try again.
I make my own products (I was selling other people's stuff before) and will be using primarily PPC to get them sold.
I brushed off the dust from my old Adwords account and brought everything up to date. Then I made a new ad group and within minutes, traffic was going to my site. (I do know about using targeted keywords) No conversions however, that's fine, I decided to spend more time optimizing the site. So then I make another ad group more targeted and with better pre-qualifications than the old one. Still using essentially the same keywords. But despite the fact the earlier version was sending traffic without fail, the newer ad, despite using the same keywords, was sending zilch. Not sure why, its as if adwords only wants to focus on my first one.
I even deleted my first ad group, but now NOTHING is being sent to my more optimized ads. I look at the magnifying glass and it says I am good to go.
Any advice?
