I personally think you should try targeting one or two keywords. Yes, the traffic will be less but it's easier to rank with the right strategy and better for your sanity!

I used to build EMDs and they still rank no problem (forget the nonsense you read about Panda and Penguin). Now I am concentrating on building my brand using the authority site model.

Simply put search engines out of the equation and you'll see there are other things to do than spend all night watching the serps! :-)

I enjoy seeing my sites/posts rank in the top #10, jump out of the top #100 and then back into the top #10 (usually top #3). It's always the same pattern and I know that my site will receive it's true ranking eventually. You definitely need patience if you're looking to "launch jack" then you need to start your link building about 9 days before the launch. In my tests, that seems to be the optimum time.

I think this is the same issue with many people and they think of G being racist to some. But i don't think that unless you breach their T&C, you aren't going to get affected

You think so? I personally think SEOs are getting dumber. Each year you see threads like "SEO in 2013" when the same techniques were working two years back.

It's like pushing SEO to the limit when Google announces an update when all you need to keep doing is the basics.

Were you hit by that? I see a lot of sites got dumped (rightfully so) in the last 24 hours.

None of my sites have been effected. That includes 12 EMDs. I'll give it a few days but so far so good...

I am targeting less than 4 keywords. The problem is I am competing against two content farms who Google has rewarded with 80% of the SERPS.

This isn't a dance, its a slap. I went from #3 to not ranked. I go through the 50+ pages of results every day at least twice, and never see my site. Like I said above, 80% of the results are between two content farms.

Someone who is very serious about his business. I am in the content business. I have to know what keywords, titles, domains, etc. are ranking at all times and try to produce similar content.

It's definitely some Animal Penalty. Not interested in sharing the domain as when I do this people never respond... not interested in new competition.

Didn't break the T&C, no alerts in GWMT. Just slapped algorithmically.

If you're hinting towards high PR Private networks, one of the content farms that owns 80% of these SERPS interlinks all their properties and subdomains with no penalty.

Yes, and my site has over 1500 pages of unique content. So I don't have a clue what's going on.

I'm off to GWMT, adding more backlinks to my disavow list and hoping something happens. If nothing happens in a month I'll be re-launching this concept on two new domains. Looking to buy at least two PR4's with strong backlinks in the industry. It's going to cost up to $2000 to relaunch but a fresh domain will pay off down the line if it gets the same respect the content farms do.
