When you paste the tracking code from Google analytics into your webpages, is it then able to record what specific website your visitors clicked through from?

To track your conversion, you need to set it up from Google Analytic conversion set up.

If I am placing ads on specific websites, do I need to create custom campaigns so that analytics can tell where my clicks came from? Or can it tell automatically? Thanks.

Nope, you don't have to.

Once you add the tracking code to your site and validate
it's authenticity it will automatically tracks where ever your traffic
comes from and also show you the exact keywords used.

I don't need keywords. I just need to know which site placements are producing clicks and sales. Thanks guys.

  Yes you will see that under Traffic Sources -> Sources > Refferrals. You will see how much traffic you got from each website. To track yours sales values you will have to set up goals first
