    As a general rule of thumb, the closer your tiers are to your main site, the more careful you should be about what you do to them or with them. The idea behind tiered link building is that you are creating a buffer around your main site and also creating exposure for the site in terms of links on other properties. While I wouldn’t suggest blasting anything ever, you are better off doing it to tier 3’s than to tier 2’s. Keep your tier two’s relatively clean.

    With the recent Algo updates, it is not recommended to build links like tier 2 or tier 3 with ScrapeBox and Xrumer. Blasting links at sites usually has massive negative link velocity. If you want to increase your ranking effectively, build backlinks from different authority sites (i.e., contextual links from a mix of do-follow and no-follow Web 2.0s, blog posts, wiki, social bookmarking, press releases, article directory submission, document sharing, video, HPBL and blog posts).

    Always use buffer sites - never point "blasts" directly to your website. Blasts to your sites will get you slammed by Google (I know this because I have tested it myself).

    Matt Woodward advises quick/cheap backlinks to your Tier #2/3. I like to use Web 2.0 sites and send high PR links to them. Once the backlinks are indexed, I drop some outbound links to my money site. Obviously, drip feed this to make it look organic.
