Long Tail Keyword Research

Hey guys,

Really quick question. How do you find long tail keywords that don't have your main keyword in them. For example, say your niche is about "herbal gardening" how would you go about using that keyword to find the long-tail term "growing thyme in winter" and such others (just as a random example).

Is scrapebox capable of doing this?

    You'll need to seed your keyword tool with a small bunch of diverse keywords. Then also use Google Keyword Tool's ad groups. Also, try Latent Semantic Indexing.

    No method that I know of will give you all these semantically related suggestions with only one seed keyword.

    This said, when you seed with about 20 keywords and use a combination of keyword suggestion engines, starting and ending with GKT, as per the SEOlater method, you will get a massive longtail keyword list.

      Scrapebox keyword finder is good, I usually stick with the Google keyword tool and just play around with a list to get some more ideas.

      Using your example you could start with a list of herbs and put them in to the keyword tool and see what it generates. then just build your own list around the keywords it throws back.

      Ubersuggest is also pretty good if yo're looking for some quick ideas

        I've been thinking myself, I wonder if you could automate a piece of software to scrape the main keywords in the H1/H2 tags of the main competitor sites.

        Just out of curiosity, where did you hear about LSI? Brilliant resource.

    The Google Keyword Tool gives you a ton of niche related keywords as long as you don't click the "Only show ideas closely related to my search terms" box. And it'll even sort them by niche.

    Download all of these, then plug them into the Scrapebox keyword scraper (if you have Scrapebox) and go 4 levels deep. You'll have more long tail keywords than you know what to do with.

    Would love to know what people do with their longtail keywords. Do you write articles per longtail keywords or do you categorize them in meta level categories and then articles on these categories.

      If, according to the GKT, they get at least 20 searches a month, (Yup, 20) and it's an extremely buyer oriented keyword, I'll consider writing a short article or creating a video.

      If you can get 5-10 people a month finding your review on something that they're REALLY interested in buying, and just 1 of those people decide to buy through your link, it's worth spending a few minutes putting together a quick review.

    To find the long tail keyword related to your niche. You have to do swapping a keyword in the beginning or trailing point of your keyword.

    Keyword suggestion tool — Google suggest scraper — Übersuggest is a great tool for very long tail keyword research. So long that even Google keyword tool won't record data.

    You may also use information from your Google Analytics, as it sometimes provides valuable insights regarding long-tail keywords. In particular, the phrases which already drove traffic to your site do not always contain specific keywords and the revision of the search queries may actually result in fresh long-tail keyword ideas. Check organic traffic sources for those phrases via which people came to find and visit your site, and may be some of them are good enough as long-tail keywords on their own or may become such after some refinement.

    main keyword -> find a list of keyword -> pick one of them, which has high searches -> get more keywords list from this one...

    Not sure if this an old post or not but if you want to get related keywords to your seed keyword you can't rely solely on tools. Not one tool will give you same meaning or relation to a keyword you input.For this you need to use your head.
    You can do 2 things:
    1. Find the herbs in google search engine and then put it in keyword planner (adwords keyword tool is no more!)
    2.You need to go to google and then search for that specific keyword. Below that google page you will find related keywords. Pass those in google adwords keyword tool. If you still dont have enough keywords you could use the related keywords in search engine again and find other related keywords untill you are satisfied with the results.

    Of course, you can use Google Adwords Keyword Tool to find long tail keywords and go deeper you would find long tail keywords as well as some less competitive keywords too.

    dannym2, I think there isn't any particular secret to discovering long-tail keywords.

    In our Rank Tracker, for example, there are 19 methods of keyword research. Some of them are more suited for finding longer keyword phrases, for example:

    - Ask related search suggestions (form the Ask search engine)
    - Ask TypeAhead search suggestions
    - Word mixer
    - Word combinations
