301 Redirect Help Needed

As far as I can tell my website was manually penalized by Google back in 2011 and hasn't recovered since. I've been working on/off with it since, though over the last few weeks I've stepped up my efforts.

I've recently streamlined the product pages on my retail website and have edited the .htaccess file to include a list of 301 redirects. Some have worked while others don't. I don't know if the canonical module attached to my site is screwing with the redirects or if I've set them up wrong.

Here's an example of a 301 redirect that isn't working:

redirect 301 /pvc-jackets/274-long-black-pvc-matrix-trinity-coat-medium.html

Instead of redirecting to the stated page it's sending the visitor to my homepage. Any ideas why this is happening please?

Many thanks in advance for any help. Please also offer constructive criticism for the site if you have any.

I've seen that kind of thing happening on redirects when the site software has some kind of internal caching going on. Perhaps you'd be better trying on the forums for the e-commerce software you're using?

It looks like a lot of your pages aren't even indexed. This *might* be because of the product description. Did you copy it from the supplier's description? If yes Google might see it as duplicate content and not index it.

One suggestion - add an 'about' page. Personally when I'm shopping online and don't see any company information I quickly leave and look at the next website. I *never* buy from a site with no company info.
