3 Top Adsense Tips For Newbies (Update: More Tips Added!)

Hey all,

Having read a number of posts relating to Adsense I would just like to give a few tips that you should follow when trying to create websites that generate an Adsense revenue:
  • Keyword Research
This is the most important part of your process. This is not a hard and fast rule but there are some good ways of estimating how easy it will be to rank for your target keywords. Try to target keywords that have lesss than 50,000 competing pages (in quotes) in Google.

Also, check out the top 5 results in Google for your target phrase. Make sure they have a low Pagerank - Prefereably not more than PR3 and hopefully at least 1 or 2 results will have a PR1 or less.

It's also a good idea to see how many incoming links each of these sites have. This will be a good indicator of how much work you need to do in order to outrank them. Google do not report backlinks well so when analysing your competitions back-links go by Yahoo counts.




  • Is It Worth It?
Now you know you have a chance of ranking for your keyword(s) you need to find out whether it's worth your time and effort. (This is where many marketers fall down).




Just because you can rank doesn't mean you should. You need to decide if that keyword is a "BUYING KEYWORD". What I mean by this is : If your searching the web for "how to install windows" then the chances are your looking for an article - not to buy something.

But if your searching for "upgrade to windows vista" then it's fairly obvious you're considering a purchase. This means that your site visitor would be far more likely to click an advertisement, thus giving you a much higher CTR% (ClickThrough Rate).







  • Cost Per Click
If your keyword(s) qualify for all of the above then the only thing left is to ensure the CPC (Cost Per Click) is satisfactory. There's no point targeting keywords that are only going to generate you $0.05 per click. You should be able to easily find keywords that will earn you at least $0.30-$0.50 per click and often well over $1.00.

    good tips jonboy. Let me just add that you can really boost your earnings by building your backlinks to your adsense site with keywords as your anchor text on a regular basis. Since SEO is the key to making a good living with Adsense you need to concentrate on building backlinks the right way.

    thanks for the useful post. Just wondering, lets say you choose the right keyword which has less than 50000 competing pages in "quotes", how long will it take to rank in the first page of google and how many backlinks do you need?

      Hey there,

      It really depends on the keyword you're targeting. One keyword might get there within a couple of weeks within only a handful of backlinks. Another keyword may takes months and many more backlinks.

      As a general rule if you have targeted easy to rank for (longtail) keywords and have followed all the steps above then you should be on the front page within 2-3 months, (tops) probably less.

      As another user mentioned - it's important to get backlinks using anchor text (and variations of it) for your target keyword.

      You also have to take into account the quality of your backlinks (and your competitions).

      I know this is a bit of a plug but download the report in my signature and this is all explained in detail, just ignore the bits relating to AdSense if that's not your cup of tea.

      Here's Another basic linking tip:

      When gaining backlinks to your site remember that a relevant link will add far more weight than an irrelevant link.

      If your site is about dog training tips then links from other related sites within that niche are far more valuable than links from sites that have nothing to do with your niche.

      Hypothetically: - If I were given the choice between a PR3 backlink to my dog training tips site from a site about weight loss OR a PR1 backlink from a site about dog training toys. I Would take the PR1 Backlink.

      PR shouldn't be ignored (some would disagree here) - It's a good indicator BUT that's all it is, there are lots of other important factors also.

      When it comes to SEO you always have to think natural. Build "content relevant" links naturally (and slowly to start with) and you won't go too far wrong.

      If you aim to have a number of websites and you can afford it, join a good quality blog network. This will really ease your linking efforts, I won't recommend one here as I don't want to appear biased and it's not the aim of this post but PM me if you want to know which services I use.

      If your just concentrating on one site then save your money and gain your links manually using article marketing, the large array of social sites, and good link directories.

    I use Nichebot as it has almost all the keyword research tools I need in one BUT you don't have to. I tell you what i'll do.

    I will pick a niche and a group of keywords and explain how I do it along the way.

    I won't go as far as actually creating the site etc as i'm working on another project right now, this will just be a demonstration.

    I have a couple of other things to do then i'll get back to you with this.

      I'll do this in multiple posts as i'm on a time limit - I am using all FREE tools for this (I forgot how time consuming that is ) so that it can be easily copied.

      First of all I literally think of any niche. It could be Stereos, dogs, trainers, fitness equipment, hammer drills - (just off the top of my head).

      But for this example I am going to pick "stock trading".

      Now, before I even start looking at keywords, competition etc I want to know if there's money to be made in this niche, (yeah we all know it's a popular niche but that's why it's a good example).

      I know we're creating Adsense sites here but don't limit yourself to one income stream. So...

      I go to Google and type in "stock trading: affiliate"
      • A quick search shows there are loads of affiliate programs for stock trading.
      (you could do the same for CPA offers etc)

      Next...

      I go to Clickbank marketplace and type in "trading"
      • Again - There are loads of affiliate programs related to this niche.
      So I already know that Adsense isn't my only option here.
      • A quick search of Google on the term "stock trading" shows me there are loads of ads.
      So, NOW I know there's lots of ways to earn money with this niche it's worth investing time into doing some keyword research, (I never start digging keyword data until I have taken these steps).

      Hi folks,

      First of all apologies for any spelling or grammar errors but i'm in a bit of a rush).

      Ok,

      Now I know my niche is profitable it's time to start digging for some good keywords.

      So, (I am doing this with free tools remember so i'm taking a slightly different approach than normal but the principles are the same. There may be free tools that do this quicker but as I said i'm used to using nichebot).

      Note: You could also use Wordtracker for steps below.



      Go to Google Keyword Tool - www.google.com/sktool/
      • Type in stock trading
      • Export those given keywords to a spreadsheet
      Then go to Googles Adwords Tool - https://adwords.google.com/select/KeywordToolExternal
      • Type in stock trading again making sure you have checked "use synonyms"
      • Scroll down until you reach the second section "additional keywords to be considered".
      • This will give you some LSI phrases (phrases based around stock trading but not necesarily including the exact phrase)
      • Export those keywords and copy them into the same spreadsheet.
      • Sort those keywords by amount of monthly searches (descending).
      • Delete anything under around 200 monthly searches
      • Check number of results in google in quotes (" ") for each of the first 50 keywords and put this information in spreadsheet. (Keep the other keywords to one side just in case you don't have enough results after you initial 50 searches).
      • Sort data again this time by competition (ascending)
      • Delete everything above 50,000
      • Now go to your first keyword and check out the top 5 results in google (in quotes " ").
      • While your there see how many ads there are for your keyword (if there are lots then that means there's competition and this is a good indication that you will earn a decent CPC% - (only an indication though).

      • Repeat this for the rest of your 50 keywords, (time consuming I know).
      • Note on your spreadsheet the Pagerank value for these sites next to each keyword (seperate column).
      • Also note how many ads there in another column -
      • Keep all the keywords where the average value is less than PR3
        and that have 8 ads or more.
      • Now you have a good keyword list its time to pick your keywords. Take into account everything I said in my first post in this thread.
      Don't go for:

      best stock trading
      best online stock trading
      best stock trading online
      (you get the piture)
      • Try and pick varied keywords that you can write (or outsource) varied unique articles for.
      That's it for now.

      As soon as i've finished doing all of the above for the term "stock trading" i'll attach the file so you can the keywords i've picked and how I picked them.

      NOTE: If you're finding really good results before you complete your first 50 then you could just go with what you've got. You only need between 8-15 keywords to start with build a good profitable website.

    Hi Jon, In your first post you said something about CPC, are you saying we should try to generate adsense income through PPC? If you are trying to generate income through adsense, shouldn't we traget information keywords instead of buy keywords?

    Hey Warriors,

    I wanted to re-open this thread as there's a lot of new people on the scene now who won't have seen it.

    However, I'm gonna share some more little nuggets of info...

    Others are Charging for this stuff so don't think that because it's free it's worthless.

    On TOP of the above I've added a 6 point checklist that will virtually Guarantee you quick rankings and results.

    For this you need to really analyze your competitors. If you have Market Samurai then great! If not, and it's out of your price range then check out J.Ledgers WebCompAnalyzer. But whichever tools you use, this is what you need to do.

    Take your 'keyword' and check out the top 5 results in Google (without quotes). Now use your tool of choice to get the following information on each of them:
    1. Is it a TLD? A TLD (Top Level Domain) basically means the homepage of the site and not an inside page.
    2. How many Backlinks? Are there less than 50 backlinks reported from Yahoo! (Yahoo are the most accurate imo at reporting backlinks).
    3. Are any of those backlinks from .edu or .gov sites?
    4. Is the site listed in Dmoz?
    5. Does the webpage have the keyword in the title and/or description?
    6. Does the webpage have the keyword in a header tag (<h1>)
    So, if the top results aren't all TLD's, aren't listed in DMOZ, don't have many backlinks and (.edu or .gov backlinks), and aren't optimized on-page with Keyword in title, description, or header tags then You Are Onto A Winner!

    Note: I said less than 50 backlinks but the fewer the better. If the homepage doesn't have too many backlinks either then this is an added bonus.

    There are whole courses based on this and I've really condensed it down but I promise you this is golden stuff.

    Bottom line - Find out what your competitors are doing and do it better!

    Don't wait to long to put your best foot forward. The competition is getting fierce and if you are going to make it in this business then jump in with both feet and learn as you go. The information John gave us here is rock solid you can take it to the bank. So re-read and study the information he gave you. Go to google and research then read what John said again and then maybe you'll start getting the picture. If you do all that and you still don't understand then you might as well keep your day job.

    I hadn't seen this before but just had a look. It's not the first of it's kind and although it's not directly asking you to click ad's I'm pretty sure Google would frown upon this. I'm also pretty sure they would ban your Adsense account if they found out. Be careful.

    I would not touch it with a ten foot pole. Google is smart to say the least, if you partake in this, you are asking for TROUBLE! Run a good clean honest business and it will reward you in the long run.

    Thanks John, I'm working on the tips you gave earlier. I have already found a great keyword phrase that has high search volume and low competition. The keyword phrase has 246,000 searches per month and no one bidding on the phrase. If I were doing ppc I'd make a ton but I'm going the natural route for now. I found a site that was set up about a week ago that was on page one for that phrase but it has no seo work done on it so I'm sure I can beat it.

    Priority number one is finding the higher paying keywords. I have some adsense sites that get just a couple clicks a day but those clicks are pulling in $2+ each, then some of my more popular sites are getting 30-50 clicks a day but with an average of .10 per click, which is a letdown. If a site is garnering poor clicks it will most likely always garner poor clicks (at least on those keywords or on that page)

    Safe Travels, that is true but the higher paying keywords are a bit more competitive which require more SEO work on our part online and off. I agree with you though, it's best to put the time in now and reap the rewards later. I found a helpful video made by a representative of google that will help people understand how google searches for news articles to included in google news. It's not a method they use for all searches but it gives a good basic idea. I put it on the home page of #3 below.

    Hey all,

    Just wanted to ressurect this thread again as I have some serious additions to make over the coming months.

    I have promised my subscribers a completely free full on course that will teach my whole Adsense business model that I am using right now in mid 2010. Well, I thought why not give it to you guys too.
