Slap warning signs?

Maybe this is a silly question, but I think a lot of people would find it interesting...

If we look back at past Google slaps - were there any warning signs or indicators that (had we paid attention) we could have at least known something was going to come down?

    Well, Cutts has told everyone within ear shot that a massive update was coming today or Monday for about a week now. There has been more than a few threads here talking about it as well. Not sure how many more warning signs or indicators are needed.
