Trying To Get Answers From The Experienced! :-)

I'm new to affiliate marketing & would like to start making just a few bucks if possible. I was wondering if people who already have the experience could help to answer this question.

If I were to try to rank for a keyword that consist of the main brand name in the keyword and the main brand is currently dominating the first page of the Google SERP, does this mean that I will NOT be able to overtake it's ranking position?

example:

"Nike Shox P83 Hightops"

And now let's say that Nike is already in the top 3-5 posititions, Nike has low backlinks & PR for that particular keyword phrase, will I still be able to out-rank them in this case or do you believe that Google will still let them dominate because it's their brand, despite the fact that they have low PR & low backlinks?

I would greatly appreciate those who actually have experience in this type of situation to reply. Especially after the Panda & Penguin updates. Thank you for the support Warrior family!

P.S. I forgot to mention that I already know that the actual brand names will hold more weight with less effort in the eyes of Google because Google already has it in their algorithm to place them higher, but I need to know if it's too difficult to beat them if they are already ranking well.

    Hey there, I think if you SEO your site with great content and make your backlinking method look natural, you should be fine. It's ALWAYS possible to out rank anyone. Even if they are a brand, if your bring something good to the table, then Google will reward you.

    I have found that adding YouTube videos into small niche sites help me rank well too. Try to find YouTube videos which are popular and have over a good few thousand views.

    You can definitely out rank brands like this with no problems, but some can take a bit of time, as its always a benefit to have an aged domain name.

      I appreciate your input, but I'd like to also ask you if you are actually ranking well from your own experience, competing with those competitors who are the actual owners of the brand name (Nike, Reebok, Ipad, Kindle, etc.,etc..). "Have you actually competed with them & from your own experience have been successful out-ranking them?" is where I'm getting at. Thanks again Larry...

      P.S. I meant to say that is just an example of some the brand names & I'm NOT asking if you competed with those particular brands. Hopefully you understood that I was just giving you an example. lol Sorry Larry.

    It’s not new that most brands are winning the battle against Google. However, it’s not impossible to outrank them. There are lots of non-brand sites that beat the brand sites in the first page of Google search page. They did this by creating a well-built and well-designed website that offers numerous options for the visitors, as well as putting in comprehensive content. Having this type of site will attract more visitors. More visitors mean increase in targeted traffic.

    It's not impossible to outrank brand names. I've seen lots of examples of poor on page optimization that I take advantage of.

    If you are targeting "brand name review" then I wouldn't purchase the EMD as this would breach copyright. Instead, start your own brand and rank pages off your domain so you would build a site like this:

    "www.mysite.com/nike-shox-p83-hightops"

    You can still optimize the above page as you would any EMD.

    This is advantageous for two reasons:

    1) You can publish any keyword you want without breaching copyright and you won't have to fight over domain registration.

    2) Building an authority site is much more immune to Google updates. After you build enough authority you can rank for keywords with little or no backlinking.
