Choosing less competitive keywords

When I first learned to rank my website in Google, I used this method:

1) Choose a keyword that is less than 30,000 in search result (with quote), this is something similar to the bum marketing method. Using some on-page optizimation and some backlinks, I will be able to appear on top 20 position on Google. Sometimes I get top 10 position.

Later on I tried another methods:

2) Choose a keyword that is less than 3,000 in search result (allintitle), using some on-page optizimation and some backlinks, I will be able to appear on top 20 position on Google too. The lesser the search results in allintitle, the more chance for me to get top 10 position.

Recently I read something from a famous Internet marketer, the 'proper way' to rank high in GOOGLE is to check the 'backlinks' result for websites which are at the top 10 position. See how many backlinks they have, and try to get MORE backlinks than them to outrank them.

If the top 10 websites (for a certain keywords) do not show many backlinks, that's mean the keyword is easy to rank for.

Any seo expert here can enlighten me on this? I am refering to GOOGLE search engine.

Thanks in advance.

If the top sites have few backlinks then this is certainly a good indicator that your chosen keyword should be reletaively easy to rank for.

But you should also analyse the quality of those backlinks. Are they from good authority sites?

Do the top few sites for that keyword have a low PR?

All these things will factor in easy ranking.

    Cheers,
    John.

One thing you should note here is that more is not enough .

You should also have more quality links to your website .

But , do not also forget about redolence and proper structuring your website so as to get the most .

Quality + Quantity + relevance + proper files and directory structuring + fresh and quality content

There are many more factors to ranking than just looking at competitors back links and getting more than them. Focus on getting good relevant one way links (preferably contextual) and adding good content to your site. If you do that better than your competitors then eventually you will beat them.

    Hey Vintaysg,

The number or backlinks you have is not that important, it's the quality of your links that really count. Just remember that quality always beats quantity. For example; a website with 60 High Page Rank backlinks, would certainly overtake a website with hundreds of low Page Rank backlinks. Also, having your site or article optimized for the keyword you want to rank high for is very important as well.

      Hi pj413,

I agree, "it's the quality of your links that really count", but I disagree that PageRank is an indication of quality, it's not, it is an indication of link popularity, but quality has much more to do with relevance and your PR score is independent of relevance.

Along with relevant content, relevant traffic is a major indicator of quality. If you study SERPs you will see that PR does not play a significant role in ranking, while relevance is the key factor. Relevant links will increase your rankings while irrelevant links do nothing, regardless of the PR those links provide. This is easy to verify by reviewing the SERP and observing the frequency of low PR pages outranking much higher PR pages.

that is very true... the lesser the search result the better your chances to get on front page... but make sure that these less number of people are there to buy from you and not just come and go.. as anyways you will be having less traffic.. but this will be quality traffic as they searching for the exact thing...
So optimize nicely and you might get ur sales...

I just said that "can also mean". I didn't say that its accurate. Of course that is a good start. And ill thank you for that good advice...

But what if, yes it is indeed a less competitive but surfers don't usually looking for that kind of keyword on the net. What would you do then? Yes its on top of the page in search engine(s). But how can you increase your visitors that soon they will be your possible traders?

        Thanks

Good point. Ranking for some crazy search term can be a minute's business, but the question is whether there is some value to get out of the ranking. The trick is choosing popular, yet less competitive keywords you can find and work out a good combination of high- and low-volume search terms to get enough targeted traffic.

    Great approach vintaysg,

I recently launched my website clickadtrix.com and I targeted less competitively keywords and the results are amazing. my site is listed in top 20 in most of the keywords.
The back links on online marking discussion forums and sites like slideshare, authorstream, twitter etc gave top listing on certain keywords in google organic listings.

    Thanks,

I experienced that everything depends on the competition of niches.

Sometimes I am able to get a first page rank even if search results in quotes are greater than 100,000 because competition is not that fierce.

Other times with only 20,000 search results and a long tail keyword it takes a hard time to obtain a top rank just because the main market is quite competitive.

thats a good start. makes sense since less competitive keywords compete with less websites. after ranking high enough i think you can then move on to a more competitive keyword.

The last method that you have mentioned is the most effective method that I use to judge the competition for a particular keyword and is vital in deciding whether a keyword is worth targeting. Competing sites and traffic should also be compared and it is vital to find the right balance.

You can use the free Yahoo Site Explorer tool to view the number of backlinks and pages for any URL to get an idea of the strength of the web page you're competing against.

Just type in the URL in the Explore URL field and click.

Yeah a less competitive keyword but that which people search for, if not you will only rank high without any traffic from the keyword.

It's really a pretty simple concept. Find the less competitive keywords for your niche and get some links pointing to your page that is SEO'ed for that phrase. If you know how to find the real hidden gems, you can build a nice stream of traffic from several low-comp keywords. I use the software I talk about in this blog post: Keyword Mining and I love it. But if you have lots of time on your hands, you can learn how to discover those great keywords on your own for free. Comes down to how much you value your time doing "grunt" work.

    Agreed.
I think that how relevant a back link is to your content is VERY important.
So, look at PR and relevancy to your topic....
If these two are strong, you'll be in a great position.

How much traffic are you getting if you're in top 20 for your chosen keywords? How many uniques per day? Just curious if the reported "avg searches" by google keyword tool really worth looking at using this test by vintaysg.

choosing less competitive keywords is good but if you choose less competitive keywords and even less searching keyword then its worst to work with that keyword...its good and easy to get good rank through low competitive keywords
