OK I sell widgets (not really but for the sake of this question I do) on my website. My site is new so I don't have any SEO built up and without PPC ads I wouldn't have any traffic. So I started an adwords campaign on google using different keywords such as "widgets, widgets for sale, funny widgets, large widgets" etc. I sell other things on my site besides widgets but when someone clicks on my adword, they go right to my main widgets page where it has about 15 different widgets displayed with pictures. The potential customer can then click on a specific item to get more detail and to order. So far I have received a little over 150 clicks through PPC ads but no sales. Google analytics shows my bounce rate to be 56%. I don't think my prices are unreasonable and I have widgets on my site that I haven't seen on any other site that sells widgets. I figured that with PPC ads being so specific I should be able to get a conversion rate where I would expect a few sales out of 150 hits.

Should I continue to run my campaign or do you think it would be a better idea to pause, make some changes to my site and then continue?

150 PPC hits and still no sale? Its very weird, clearly indicating you haven't selected the correct keywords for your PPC campaign. Do some more keyword research.

Select those keywords which are more relevant to your site..

If people click the ads then they should be given what you have promised.

I think you need to refine your keywords more. Since you are selling widgets rather than for free you will have to really refine the ads and keywords or people might think its just free and when the land might get a different picture and leave.

If the PPC traffic IS in fact targeted (continuity of messaging from keyword to ads, and then from ads to landing page), you probably need to start thinking about things on your website that might be causing friction in the buying process.

Also double check your settings and make sure you don't have Keyword Match Type set to Broad, in which case you're probably not getting nearly as targeted traffic as you may think.

Thanks for the replys. I'm thinking it has to do with my site and landing page. I'll have to play around with some changes. I don't think I can be more specific on the keywords as I use about 7 variations within the campaign. For example, if it were bowling balls that I was selling, I would have to have the words "bowling ball" included in any keyword phrase within the campaign. So it is pretty specific and since I am selling a physical product I don't think any of the viewers are expecting it for free.

At least my current campaign isn't costing me anything as I am currently using a $100 promotional voucher from google. It will give me time to try different things before I need to actually pay anything.

Double check that all keywords are not set to Broad Match...otherwise, there could be all sorts of junk keywords you're buying without knowing it.

Other than that, update the page, test, tweak, test again, rinse and repeat!

I updated my adwords and they were set to broad. I have changed that so hopefully that will help driving better traffic.

            Thanks for the help

  • Are you checking your google quality score? This is a good indication if your page content is matching up and relevant to the words you are bidding on. If the quality score is low, your CPC will go up and can become very inefficient.

Broad setting is something else to check as mentioned about. You can always see what words/phrases are sending you the hits on the main page of the campaign.

There is too much difference in broad and exact match keywords..
