There are plenty of WSO's and information on this site on how to create, or even buy, EDU links. Use the search function.

There are hundreds of blogs .edu that you can search in google (site:.edu) and you could write a comment (but do NOT spam!)

When it comes to .edu links you have to choices...

    Get them legitimately or spam.

Spamming is somewhat easy: forum profiles, wikis etc.

You CAN get them legitimately...but it's not easy.

Needless to say you need a legit looking site before you even begin (besttoasterreviewsx.com isn't gonna cut it).

Then you can build links like you would with any other site:
    Broken link building
    Resource page link building/link begging
Guest posting (Yes, I've actually done it on a .edu!)

While I don't think big G gives a lot of special love for the .edu domain extension...almost every .edu site has the trust, authority and link profile you want from a linking site.

And you're right. Google has no "preference" at all over any kind of domain extension, for this purpose, and says so openly and repeatedly.

Sorry, but this simply isn't true at all.

You were misinformed, Nathan (like countless others here). It's not nearly as simple as that, though people selling them would love us all to believe so.

Really? There are a lot of .edu with spammy, low-authority link profiles that were registered a few weeks ago?

OK, there might be a few like that.

But 99% of .edu domains have killer link profiles.

Please don't say something like "Sorry, but this simply isn't true at all. " and cite a WF thread as evidence. LOL.

Show me a few .edu with crappy link profiles and I'll be quiet.

There different types of .edu backlinks that you can have including: edu wiki's, edu blogs and edu forums. You can go to Google search bar and key in site:.edu inurl:blog "post a comment" -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" "niche". The site:edu means that we're only searching for .edu domains; the inurl:blog "post a comment" will only show blogs that enables comments; the -"comments closed" -"you must be logged in" means that the search will be filtered to discard blogs which need you to sign in before you can post a comment; and the "niche" is where you should put your niche topic - Google will only show .edu blogs related to your site.

Another option is by checking your competitors' websites and check if they have .edu backlinks and trace where they're getting them from. Doing this with a tool like Market Samurai is very easy. Simply search for a keyword and check the SEO Competition for the first 10 results and check how many links each domain has from .edu sites. You will see this in the BLEG or Backlink Education/Government.

Get them legitimately. You could offer a scholarship for a university and that would give you a high PR. Sponsor a school event. If you don't want to spend money, find a professor who is active on his/her school page and offer some type of resource to get a link. Many professors put slides/resources on their school pages.

These links are STRONG. I'm a student at a university and all students get access to a subpage of the school's site for their own personal page or whatever. So subpage of a PR 8 site and it had more DA and authority than any other type of link. The page itself didn't have PR but the root domain was PR 8 so it still was my strongest link. I don't do SEO as a service anymore but there are lots of ways to get .edu backlinks.

But also gotta mention, I wouldn't bother with BS .edu links. Anyone can register a .edu, doesn't make it stronger than any other domain. It has to be a legit site.

Its definitely not true. Anyone can't register .edu. That's why .edu domains are less spammy in nature compared to other domain tlds. And it is also true that most .edu domains are authority site. So getting link from those sites definitely worth.
