Right now I'm cold calling a targeted niche list of businesses (plumbers).
Basically I call them up and offer them a free seo video report.
The majority of them are interested in the free video report because its free and its a video about their website. The video basically presents their website from an SEO on and off page standpoint.

So after I create the video, I will either email it directly to them or call them first and let them know I have the video completed. 99% of them watch the video, and then they have more questions and they want to talk on the phone. This is usually where things get hairy, they ask me lots of questions, hoping to get free information out of me and in the end they don't go forward with a contract.

What should I change in my approach?

Show them where their competitors are ranking and how easy it is to find them. Explain to them they are losing money by not taking advantage of the same opportunities their competitors are. Be honest with them, but don't give them any information they can go and do on their own.

Also, try and run an ad in the services section of CL. This way you will have targeted customers contact you instead of you going off of cold calling. It is always a better feeling knowing someone actually wants your service than hear no 99 out of 100 times.

This should go either in the SEO forum, or the ...is there a local business/offline business forum?

In any case, you would be better off scheduling an appointment with these people rather than trying to close over the phone. Sell the result, not the process.

I think that your video needs to discuss not general SEO tactics but YOUR personal service, and how it will help them, what they should expect, and when, so that they understand that not doing it costs more money to them than doing it, and whilst it's an ongoing process, the returns will far outweigh the initial cost. You need to spell that out to them.

You sales should focus on the results they get, the time they save, the sale they make. When you're face to face with them - take out the contract, put it on the table, and start filling it in. Then ask them for something like a business card to take their details from. This is a soft commitment.

You're not going to get anywhere over the phone - it's you people buy services off, not a faceless person on the end of the phone. Unless you're exceptional at closing over the phone.

Maybe through that process give them the opportunity of a discount off the next work, or an upgrade in service if they refer you to their friends...

Maybe even ask them why they haven't already done it? Ask them if they like their competitors taking money from them?

You're not thinking in terms of the customer, just in terms of how you can get a sale, and that's a good way to fail...

If your method to rank them is solid and unique then they won't be able to copy it.

I even do that here on the forum, I can explain my method in full detail to every one who asks without the risk of losing sales.

Most people won't be able or don't want to invest $25k in a private network when they can get it for let's say 100 bucks a month.

So you have to explain your service in such way that it becomes very uninteresting for them to do it their selves.

It's an interesting topic for me, I work for a plumbing company as their internet guy and I have a lot of experience in sales and marketing.

Build lots of rapport over the phone, and schedule a time to see them face to face. Seriously, the more time you spend developing a relationship with the person the more receptive they are to your ideas and opinions. Face to face time is really important for this.
Also, avoid feature dumping. Meaning, don't just tell them what your service provides.

The most important thing you can do is listen to their NEEDS and tell them how they will BENEFIT from the relevant FEATURES that cater to those needs. How do you find their needs? By building rapport! See? It's all connected

Don't offer clients full information on SEO in the presentation.
    Just explain the basic things.
If they start asking questions, give short and smart answers.
But i think its better to hire sales person to get you clients.

I am on the receiving end. I get calls from so many SEO companies and the first thing I look at is how well they are ranked - PR, Authority, Client Base, monthly search etc.

Most of the times the authority of the site of the SEO company is less than mine.

They also offer a free report, which I can get from 100 sites anyways.

I would like to go with a company who can promise some kind of results and testimonials of their clients. Also, where they stand with their competitor is very important. If they haven't helped themselves, how would they help me.

Yes you are right. Companies providing SEO services should have a website that ranks well on google. Also the PR and authority of the website should be good. If their own website is not good how can they provide a service thats good for their clients.

I think it would be a good idea to set a personal meeting to them. This time preparing a presentation about your services and possible results that you can deliver is a must.

We often do some calls and if the client sets a meeting, we will prepare a proposal to them. This includes:

    - SEO/Online Marketing Overview
    - Initial website analysis and suggestions
    - Initial market overview
    - Competitors profile
    - End-Client profiling (who are their other possible customers)
    - proposed SEO/Online marketing methods

It is also a good strategy if you're company is ranking good in Search Engines because you can include that to your introduction. Make sure you presentation is not too long but brief enough to explain everything. We find this very effective because we tend to make our prospect client feels that we can be added to their marketing arsenal.

It is also important to know the nature of their business before engaging into a personal meeting.
