Hi all,

Today I got 89% bounce rate (my average is about 50%). And approx 8 unique visits. So this indicates to me there's a problem. I have quality content and a nice easy-to-view site. So the problem is most likely that I haven't made it easy for people to immediately find what they want. I've got a plan for that - add categories and tags as dropdowns in the menu.

However, I want to get feedback from people for a short time. So I was thinking the best bet is a simple popup that has a survey. Questions like what would enhance your experience, what would you like to see more of, and what did you most want to get from your visit today, etc. Maybe offer a list subscription and a free bonus.

I'm not a huge fan of popups or even in-frame popups so was wondering too, is there a way to have a button somewhere on the outer edge that when the mouse is hovered over, the popup slides out. Any thoughts?

This allows me to be more aware of my site and what my visitors/customers are looking for.

  • Magnatolia,

I think a popup is a step in the wrong direction. If the people coming to your site are already not finding what they are looking for, they are not likely to be in a mood to help you out. They will see the popup as an annoyance and leave the site even faster than they already are.

You should research your audience. Who is it that your website is targeted at? Learn more about that audience and then craft your content for them. I understand that the popup would be designed to learn more about your audience however that is not a good strategy in this case when they are already unimpressed with your content. Do you maintain an email opt-in list? If so you could try sending out a survey through survey monkey.

Try looking at other successful websites that are your competitors. What are they doing to engage visitors? Have you tried starting a blog that has useful information on it? Also, have you looked at other factors like load time and ad placement?

Thanks Shawn, I agree. My content is targeted to my traffic but I think the problem is I haven't focused on 'immediate' access. I only have two categories in my main menu whereas I think my users are coming in to find an 'answer' rather than learning. I think if I add my categories and tabs, and put more effort into them, this will give better access.

And thanks for the link, that will be good to review.

You need to follow the basic rules of marketing.
    1. Get Attention
    2. Hold Interest
    3. Build Desire
    4. Demand Action

An early popup breaks the flow.
