I am working on a new site (only a few months old) but with a domain age of 12. Compared to its competition it should be ranking but it is not. (it has been indexed though) PR is still 0. Onsite SEO is done.

I assume I need a few good links to point to it to start to get it to rank.
Is a link in the yahoo directory still recommended? Does anyone have any other recommendations?

TIA.

Not recommended...they are too expensive...put the money into some other form of link-building.

Depending on your budget that link-building could take a lot of different forms.

I agree. Yahoo directory (and some other TOP 5-10 directories are worth if only the keywords you are trying to rank are VERY high competitive!)

        Thanks.
So from what I understand it will work but is not worth the money.

In that case, what else can be done to rank it? As I said as of now it is not anyway that I can see. This site does have about 100 links pointing to it. I think it just needs a boost.

There is no directory that is worth it. When have you visited
the yahoo directory, or any frggin' directory to find anything?
Except a place to spam..er...place...a link...

I would imagine the page it would be on would be PR n/a,
not to mention the fact that so many here seem to hate paid
links. No way would I ever pay that much, each year, to
        be on a useless directory.

No matter who says that their directory or this directory is the
$#!ts. It aint. Now perhaps, just perhaps DMOZ. But I don't
see the value of that anymore. In fact, I had to even see if it
was still up. Been so long since I even mentioned it, let alone
        use it.

Just a side note on Y! directory. In 1998, I had a free site (from my ISP)
developed by me and submitted. It's still there. Free.
Year after year. Yes, I still have the same ISP as in 1997...
        ditched AO-hell real quick.

Yahoo directory, dmoz, aol, dang...such memories of what
        the internet used to be.

Then what should we do in that case...!

Ignore the advice. Period. The advice is crazy and the logic is just
          insane.

If you decide to toss money down that rat hole, with that lousy
advice, check your competitors. Because if they're in there,
then what's the point? Which link trumps which link? I'd say
google pretty much ignores the yahoo directory, as they ignore
          virtually every single directory.

People confuse cause and effect quite a bit.

I made all the signals today, and I made a record amount
on adsense. If you can make all the signals today...

Now just for fun, I decided to see if amazon.com is in the
Y! directory. Yup. So you think your link will trump them? Wikipedia,
about.com, craigsllist, etc. etc. are all in there as well. There
is NO WAY any of those sites are paying a dime to be there.
Craigslist had no less that 110 sites in there. They aint paying
          $32,000 to be there.

Guess I'll be the one to say its worth it. But thats because I had money to blow. Next month I'll have to pay the 299 again to renew my yearly subscription and I'll definitely be doing that.

I wouldn't even recommend it if your site is not complete or spammy because they will not refund your money if rejected. Seen a good jump in SERP's shortly after being listed in the Yahoo directory.
