Hi guys,
I'm looking at getting a database driven site created over the next few months. Is it worth while getting the URL up & running straight away with a simple wordpress theme & some content so i can start SEOing the URL?

Will i get on the wrong side of Google if i SEO a basic WP site, then suddenly upload the new site overnight?

Of course it would keep the same URL structure & content across both sites.

Any input would be appreciated - Thanks guys

You can create a demo site using plain HTML or WP or anything that suits you. If you grow a backlink profile to this site and then replace existing site with your ecommerce site, since the new site is residing on the same domain, the backlinks that were already built to the demo site will still point to the new site. I am not sure if you are going to create the demo site in tune with the theme of the new ecommerce site. That way, the backlinks that you build will be contextual as well and match the new ecommerce site.

  • tacoLoco,

I think this is a good idea and I don’t think you will be penalized for it by search engines. As a matter of fact I have seen companies do this before. They make a website that creates buzz in anticipation for the launch of new products or a redesigned site but that doesn’t have all the functionality of their final site. For example Shinola, a company recently launched in Detroit, had a pre-launch kind of website before products they are making were ready for sale. The pre-launch site is no longer up but it had mainly images and some videos and text talking about their mission. Now it has an ecommerce feel.
