Hey friends,

For those who recovered from Google Penguin - Do you have success recovering from the keywords you were penalized ?? Because what I am feeling is - For the keywords one website was penalized by overoptmizing ITS almost impossible to rank good again.

Or you have other experience ? Please share

  • What I have learned so far is, Penguin effected those sites who have go unnatural backlinks. To recover from Penguin, I think it important to take a deep look at the backlink profile of the site and remove those unnatural backlinks which might have cause the hit.

Penguin is mainly for spam and unnatural backlinks, if you have built unnatural backlinks then I would say that try to make it natural to get benefit from this.

Have you tried using Google disavow tool to clean up your backlinks? that could be a good place to start. But I agree, it is quite tough to fully recover, you need to pay attention to all details on your site to make it looks more unspammy. Make sure all meta tags are unique, no spun content, don't over optimize your keywords on the homepage, getting rid of some features that slow your site's loading time is also helpful. Ease up a bit on creating new backlinks at least until you're back on top 100. I've been doing that to one of my client's site, after 2 months it's already on page 2 now.

I would also suggest to start building links to your inner pages too. Try to have no more than 80% of all the backlinks pointing to your home page. The rest should point to your internal pages.

From diversity point of view I suggest to have at least 50% of all the links with naked & branded anchors, then 20% with keywords like "click here", "see this", "visit this page", etc., the other 20% should include your secondary keywords and just up to 10% of the keywords must be with your main keywords. I have been following this strategy and in works fine for me for now.

Also, for the disavow tool you should know that you must submit only home pages (the domains themselves) through it and always keep in mind that for manually invoked penalties you'll have to wait till the next Penguin update happens!

Here are some additional ideas on Removing Manual Penalties With Google Disavow Tool | SAPE.RU Network Solutions. Good luck!

I've been fortunate enough to avoid the Penguin thus far. From talks I've had with others it seems a penguin afflicted website is toxic and far easier to just scrap the domain and start over.

These are the Major reasons why your website can be a Google penguin victim -

a.) Your backlink profile is *unnatural* to Google's eye. Too many software generated backlinks from low quality sites can cause you this problem.
b.) You have most backlinks pointing to a specific anchor text. This can occur when you heavily use blog network links.

Moreover you will get a notification to your Google WMT account. Once you got that notice, you will need start working on your backlink profile to make it as natural as you can (this can be tough if you had built too many backlinks) and wait for the next Penguin refresh.

    Hi, Trabalhodigital!

In my opinion, even after you have "recovered" from Penguin penalty (usually invoked due to unnatural links in your website's link profile) you will most probably NOT regain your previous traffic. In this article the author claims that ~94% of the Penguin affected websites never recover fully. To be honest, I don't believe that even the rest 6% can boast that their initial traffic is back. So, it's important to remember that even after you receive a message in GWT that you're manual penalty has been revoked you shouldn't expect much.

I have recently written a new article on the subject called: "Steps to Follow After Google's Manual Penalty Has Been Removed" in which I give 4 steps that webmasters should to follow after their Penguin penalty has been lifted. I believe they will be helpful to anyone that has successfully revoked their unnatural link punishments but haven't seen any serious growth in their organic traffic.

      Thanks Lilacor,

I know. I received revokal message on August after contacting webmasters, asking for some links removal. And I didnt see any raise in ranking!!
From that moment on, I still tried to contact more webmasters, made some links ( naked, generic, diversed keywords, blah, blah ), used DISAVOW.
According to WMT, the anchor text have been deluted. BUT no improving in SERPS.

      Lets see what happens.

Recovery is tough ! You will have to remove all the spammy links and submit reconsideration request with the work you did. (Report). Removing the links is not easy at all.

Starting a new website in good way is better idea ! If you were lucky, you might get your old site back after couple months or a year. Keep trying ..

I'm not sure if this is important but, my unnatural links revokal message was received on 10th October and not August as I said before, according to WMT.

And Lilacor, tks very much for your advices. I ll do that.

I have been trying to recover from penguin for months... no luck as of yet

Do you guys think too many bookmark links could be a reason for a penguin penalty?

I used social adr for many months and gathered up tons of links from it.. but is way too hard to get webmasters to takes these down.. but also a little scared of using disavow tool on them... Thing is these links made from social adr are mostly from high authority bookmark sites so that is why I am a bit confused about whether they are the culprit or not.

    What do guys think? Thanks

Uhh.., you might want to focus on the sites that weren't hit by any algo. update, those are the folks that don't play around chasing Google.

The guys hit by Google updates are most likely messing around with junk tactics.

I dropped by from #3 to #7 on my two main keywords. Does this mean I got hit by penguin? Or they just invalidated couple of my links?

I had similar drops of 4-5 places for a few sites. My theory (and it is just a theory), is that blog comments no longer work as well and/or the nofollow attribute is now used properly by Google.

I think it works like a virus, a disease. Once you are penalized, you will never be a clean guy from Google's point of view.

Disawoing is difficult. You have to check each link and analyse whether is or not a good thing to disavow it. You spend almost 10 months picking the right links to disavow and when the beauty bird comes again, you still in Hell.

Maybe the best thing is to have quite few links to your site. And most of them must be natural. BUT what if our sites already have thousand of inbound links? - AND because of them Penguin hit it?

Thats why recovering is one of the HARDEST things on Earth.

I had a bunch of affected sites I disavowed the heck out of that didn't move or come back at all . Even the emd's in uncompetitive niches. If this is a switch from a penalty to devaluation though I'd expect to see a slow recovery over 2-3 months.

I don't bother with the disavow. I figured everything has been factored into the current rankings, so rather than remove links (a flag), I focus on adding more "authority" (high PR,related) links every week so my ratio improves overtime (i.e. no drastic changes, staying consistently diverse with press release, articles, web2)

    Still working great post P2
