Are you guys seeing .orgs near the top of the rankings recently?

I've been doing some analyses for local clients and am seeing .orgs that are not as well optimized outranking sites with more links.

Does anyone know what's going on?

Nope, indeed I let a couple of .orgs go recently because they were not seeing the output that I'd expected. Perhaps, many more .org owners felt the same and you're now feeling the benefit?

I'm sceptical that your rank movements have been caused by any TLD factor but, then, I'm not in the local markets. Chuck us some stats!

It will be a co-incidence, there's no logical reason the big G would favor them over others, imo .com ranks slightly better than .net which ranks slightly better than .org which ranks slightly better than .info,.. .us,.. .co,... .me, etc......

Can you sight anything to confirm your remark?
Because I am too noticing some decent results with .ORG domains. I have a strong feeling, it may not be a con-incidence.

Rofl, where do you guys take such information? .com ranks better than .net -> .net ranks better than .org ???

    It's utter nonsense. For real.

Here's a sample of what I've been seeing. It's not as dramatic as it looked 3 or 4 days ago. I would swear that last time I checked these .orgs were ranked above sites that looked far more optimized. It doesn't look as strong to me today.

Wikipedia.org has been getting google love for years. What
does that mean? Nothing about extension, that's for sure.
Toss in craigslist and you have a conspiracy.

I think you people just have way to much time on your hands.

I only search when I need to find something. And I see no more
        .orgs for real searches.

In fact, you would think if google was going to actually look at
an extension, then .org would seem one to drop lower, as that
has been taken over by people who do not have nonprofit
organizations. They are using the domain to hoodwink
people into believing they have something special.
        But I digress.

That #1 ranked site is optimized for your keywords.

The keywords attorneys/lawyers are basically the same keywords.

I guess your searching for .org sites because I rarely see them for keywords I target.

I wasn't searching for .orgs. I was doing SEO research for a criminal law attorney in San Diego and noticed that two .orgs kept ranking well in heavy competition despite the fact that they were seemingly not as well optimized for the search terms.

I cannot fathom why a criminal defense atty needs to worry about
SEO. I think those local termed-spam sites are ripe for silly results, as nobody
in their right mind would need SERPs, either to advertise as an
attorney, or find one. If I am in SD really looking for an attorney, on
google, then local/maps would dominate. No website or seo needed.

I get your question. Who's going to search for attorneys using Google.

Here's how it works. He's a top attorney. He writes a lot of articles on topical issues. He gets a lot of traffic. He has a pretty powerful site that can rank on other terms if he wants it to.

So you have to ask yourself, why not rank it on criminal attorney keywords. Especially if he could dominate those keywords.

He already has a name in the area. Why not extend that brand recognition to the keyword SERPs?

Turns out, those keywords get LOTS of searches. And if it's only people trying to see who the brandname attorneys are, that may be worth his while to show up.

I know it sounds like horseshit, but SEOMoz did a case study on this a while back that showed .orgs getting a noticeable boost in the SERPS. Of course google may have changed things since then and this is something that I wouldn't even bother to test. If I can dig up that case study though ill be sure to post a link.

Overall I actually like .orgs a lot better than .coms's depending on the niche. For certain terms (like medical) a .org can convey to the user a bit more credibility/authority. This is the only reason I sometimes prefer them, and not because of some alleged ranking benefit. Just my opinion so take that for what it is.

Which one is horseshit, Moz or the .org?

Just kidding, I know it's Moz.

I don't think that .org can get a better ranking than .com ONLY because of this .org domain... I think SEO and domain name is much more important... You can also rank let's say a .ws domain and get a better SERP than .org and .com domains if only you work hard!
