I prefer Long Tail Pro. You can enter upto 5 seed keywords at once. Then it researches thousands of related keyphrases while you're going out.

I'm a MS fan, it work fine for me. But honestly, I don't think there's one tool that's way ahead of others, they're all good to help, MS, LTP, MNF, KE and etc and etc. Just get one and get to work, that's the most important part.
    Good luck.

I am still using the free Google Keyword Tool. It was also good and profitable. Many keyword easily got 1st page of Google. But there are still many keywords that we have not been able to confirm its position. We need to work hard. I am interested to try Market Samurai or Long Tail Pro. Many people say both are very good.

GKT is the base, and to speed up the process, I use
LTP and return back to compare in GKT.

Try using PPC traffic to find impressions of new keywords not available with GKT. These is especially important in the data/keyword research phase of your website.

There's a big difference between "keywords" and "markets".

To find markets you need to know what people search for and buy. Keywords come after that.

A lot of people get it backwards and pick keywords first...and wind up at #1 but can't make any money.

(I know because I've been there)

Backlinko is right, there is so much more to this that just using a keyword tool. It is important but it alone will not get you there. Keep in mind that all of these tools that use the Google Keyword Tool are limited by the tool itself and the GKT has many, many flaws.

I do like Long Tail Pro for the speed as compared to Market Samurai (Zzzzzzz).

There aren't any tools perse, but there are some places I go to see what's selling.

One place I like to look is OfferVault.com: Affiliate Marketing - Find the Best Affiliate Programs and CPA Offers from OfferVault.

That way you can see what people are actually willing to pay for in terms of leads (insurance, education etc.).

Once you have a niche within that market you can start doing keyword research to see if it's worth entering.

I'm not Backlinko, but I agree with the markets before keyword research mindset. Some of my earliest sites had zero keyword research and they're doing well since I wrote articles based on what my market would be looking for.
Even now, before I do keyword research - I spend more time thinking about the market and what they'd be looking for and then search for the best keyword combinations based on that.

I pesonally prefer LTP. But the problem with all these tools is they only use GAKT for keyword source. But there are few other options left behind.lots of new keywords are popping up every single day for which gakt may not provide enough data. So use the tools with wisdom not merely by numbers keyword research is an art and everyone may have their own style!

The only issue with market samurai I found is that Google tends to ban your IP address so best use proxies.

I am looking at Wordtracker, since they grab keywords from SEMrush which gets information from websites that are ranking, so you can actually get a more factual representation of what is ranking.

    Although perhaps a bit expensive.

The best keyword research tool is.... (Drum roll).... YOUR BRAIN!

90% of marketers all target the same queries. For example, lets say your niche is watch tv online and you are promoting NetFlix affiliate program or some other affiliate program. The keywords that you should go after should be related to to TV programs netflix has. And not keywords related to watch tv online, watch movies online, watch tv online free, watch free tv shows online etc and all those modifiers. Tonnes of these shows can be ranked for super easy and longtails can be found for them super easy, but no keyword tool is going to spit them out when you search for a head term like <watch tv online>.. So you really need to get in to the mind of your visitor and step outside the box a little bit. Make lists.

Other great methods of keyword research is just doing site:authoritysite.com and then looking through all the titles making a list of content to make. This is how i build a 1000+ page site in my niche, i basically site:allthebigauthoritysites in google, made a list of topics to write about, got my ass in to gear and wrote like a mad man. Then 6 months later i have a 1000+ page site making me $xxx a day.

Thats how you do it, not easy, but thats how it has and always will be done. Alternatively you can go the EMD route, both work, both have risks and drawbacks.

Absolutely true. No Keyword Tool (even the Google tool) will tell you tangentially related keywords.

If you rely on what the tools spit out at you you're not going to find any gems.

One thing I'd add is that SEMRush.com is a GOLD MINE. Put in your competitor's site and see what they're ranking for. Chances are they've done the hard work already.

The thing is - there are a lot of software/internet applications for finding and analysing keywords in a niche. In this case I am not sure if you are asking for a tool, which researches link prospects, or potential keywords?

However, as long as there is a demand, such tools won't stop falling.

Every single marketeer may use different tools - depending on his preferences, or mostly depending on the tool's affiliate programme.

IMHO, natural and qualified/authorised tools such as Google Keyword Tool will give you the most accurate information EVER. Any other third-party application may differentiate and curve the results.

And still, if you prefer to use a tool, research on price, choose one suitable for your needs and go for it, test it yourself! Any tool will give you results if you take actions

    Cheers
