Will this work for rankings?

Does anyone have experience making either or both of the following scenarios work to get a first page ranking?

(The URL's are KW's just examples, of course.)

Given: For KW "video" - YouTube.com ranks highly

Scenario 1: Can YouTube.com/MyAccount also rank as a separate first page listing for that same KW of "video" with proper SEO to YouTube.com/MyAccount ?

Scenario 2: Can a permanent redirect of DifferentDomain.com to YouTube.com/MyAccount rank as a separate first page listing for that same KW of "video" with proper SEO to DifferentDomain.com?

    In scenario #1 the answer is yes, however the competition for such a generic keyword is massive.

    In scenario #2 you will end up ranking the page you are redirecting to if you use a 301 permanent redirect. You can get a page to rank with a temporary redirect, but only for a limited amount of time (certainly not for a highly competitive keyword) (see 302 hijack).

      Thanks for the reply.

      That keyword was just an example...I wouldn't spend time on that one!

      So, if one can achieve separate listings by either method, is one method better/faster than the other? If so, how?

      I'm leaning towards the second method with domain redirect because that way if I ever change my mind about where it is redirected to, at least all those links are already out there pointing to the domain and bringin traffic regardless of the rankling of the ultimate destination. Also, a redirect link looks nicer when building links all over the place.

      What do you think?

        Hi IdeasAccepted,

        As I indicated in my previous reply, the second scenario will only work temporarily. If you leave a 302 redirect in place for too long that link will get de-indexed. If you make it a 301 permanent redirect the page you are redirecting to will accrue all the benefit.

        My advice would be stick to scenario #1.
