Suppose I have chosen a domain name xy.

xy.com, x-y.com, thexy.com, bestxy.com are not available.

Should I take xy1.com or bestx-y.com or you suggest something else.

Although, best-xy makes sense literally, but best x y has nil exact searches. But then x y1 also will have nil exact searches.

Any thoughts?

    How about 123xy.com or xy123.com or 321xy.com?

How about choosing something brandable? I'm afraid X and Y are part of your keywords. Unless you get a full EMD, xy1 or xy321 are quite worthless.

An EMD or Partial EMD will just give you an initial boost, the real fight is on top 5 spots. As someone above suggested, going with a brandable domain will get you returning visitors and increase the value of your asset.

After so many updates and specially emd updates, i would consider getting a sweetname, easy to remember for end users rather than making the domain name complicated and hard to remember. So focus on the name and branding not on EMD. If you get it then its well and good, its added bonus, else you have several other options too. Dont restrict yourself to old school method.

Build a brand. Here's a blog post that may help: Exact Match Domain Owners Panda-Slapped

I’ve never been a great advocate for exact match domains. The trouble is they are not “brandable” which means they are easy to forget and easy to confuse with similar sounding exact match domains. Which one of these would you be more likely to remember:

    dogmindingbrisbane.com.au
    dogsittingbrisbane.com.au
    mindyourdoginbrisbane.com.au
    hellopuppy.com.au
    brisbanedogminding.com.au

I just went through the same exercise you're going through for an ecommerce site. We picked a memorable domain name that started with two short keywords and ended in a third word that made sense and made the whole thing memorable. We also reserved a few exact match domains using other keywords in our niche. We'll use these exact-match domains for posting articles and linking back to the ecommerce site. We also put the ecommerce site on wordpress multisite so we can easily create subdomains with content linking back to the main site.
