Improving SEO with Wordpress Multisite?

Has anybody tried improving SEO with a Wordpress multisite? The idea is to have your main blog (maybe product reviews, or whatever) as http://www.keywordphrase.com and then have subdomain blogs with related keyword phrases. So, if your were selling race cars, you could have The Global Web - Automotive, Motor Sports, Power Sports, racecarreviews.com and then have http://besthotrods.racecarreviews.com and http://fastestdragsters.racecarreviews.com, etc. On each subdomain you'd put 3 or 4 articles and maybe an email capture. You would then link internally between the main subdomains and between the subdomains and the main domain.
The question is, does it help to improve SEO? Thoughts?
