Submiting to website directories?

I would like to know your opinion on submitting my website/blog to website/blog directories for creating backlinks? Is it better than article submission or commenting on blogs? Is it true that they are link farms and can have you site penalized by google and other search engines?

    These are all "old school".

    Yes, they might get you in trouble when you link directly to your money site in big numbers.

    According to me, there are still some useful and strong directories, like Yahoo, Dmoz, so they are NOT old-school. You just have to build them MANUALLY and do it right (use DIFFERENT title and description for EVERY web directory!)

    These directories help search engines understand what your site is about and help improve your relevancy
